Description
SUTURE VICRYL, crafted by Ethicon Inc., is a versatile and reliable suture material widely used in various surgical procedures. Composed of polyglactin 910, this synthetic, absorbable suture is designed for effective soft tissue approximation and ligation. Its braided structure enhances handling and knot security, while the coating of polyglactin 370 and calcium stearate ensures smooth operation.
Key Features
- Absorbability: SUTURE VICRYL is absorbed by the body through hydrolysis, typically completing absorption within 56 to 70 days. This feature eliminates the need for suture removal, promoting convenience and patient comfort.
- Tensile Strength: The suture retains approximately 75% of its tensile strength at two weeks, 50% at three weeks, and 25% at four weeks, losing all tensile strength by the fifth week. This predictable degradation profile supports healing in tissues that require temporary support.
- Biocompatibility: With minimal tissue reaction, SUTURE VICRYL reduces the risk of infection and irritation, making it suitable for a wide range of patients. It is sterilized using ethylene oxide to ensure safety.
Variants and Options
SUTURE VICRYL is available in both dyed (violet) and undyed forms, with various sizes and lengths to meet specific surgical needs. It offers options with or without stainless steel needles, providing flexibility in needle types and lengths.
Specialized Variants
- Vicryl Rapide: Designed for rapid absorption, dissolving within 14 to 28 days, ideal for tissues that heal quickly.
- Vicryl Plus Antibacterial: Contains triclosan for antimicrobial protection, suitable for environments where infection risk is a concern.
- Vicryl Quick: Offers faster absorption for specialized applications.
Indications for Use
SUTURE VICRYL is commonly employed in general surgery, orthopedic surgery, gynecological surgery, pediatric surgery, cardiac surgery, plastic and reconstructive surgery, ophthalmic and oral surgery, and dental surgery. Its adaptability makes it a preferred choice for surgeons across these disciplines.
Contraindications
SUTURE VICRYL is not recommended for closure of cutaneous wounds exposed to air and is not established for certain cardiovascular, ophthalmic, or neurological applications in some variants. The antibacterial variant is contraindicated in patients allergic to triclosan.
Handling and Storage
Proper storage at or below 25°C is essential, and the suture should not be reused or resterilized. Opened packages and unused sutures should be discarded to maintain sterility. Prolonged contact with salt solutions should be avoided to prevent calculus formation.
Additional Benefits
SUTURE VICRYL provides strong, secure knot-tying with superior biocompatibility, promoting healing with minimal scarring. Its elasticity helps manage sudden loading changes, though it is not suitable for high-load orthopedic repairs due to rapid degradation. Cost-effective and versatile, it is often chosen for ease of use and reduced need for suture removal, aligning with eco-friendly production practices where applicable.
