Description
Monosyn® by B. Braun is a versatile, absorbable monofilament suture designed for a wide range of surgical applications, including general surgery, gynecology, urology, oral surgery, and veterinary procedures. Its primary function is to provide reliable soft tissue approximation and ligation, ensuring effective wound closure and healing.
Material Composition
Crafted from a copolymer blend of glycolide, ε-caprolactone, and trimethylenecarbonate, Monosyn® offers a unique balance of strength and absorption. This composition results in a suture that maintains tensile strength over critical healing periods, with Monosyn retaining approximately 70% strength at 7 days and fully absorbing within 60 to 90 days.
Color and Structure
Available in both violet and undyed options, Monosyn® features a smooth, uncoated monofilament structure. This design ensures minimal tissue trauma and reduces the risk of infection compared to braided sutures. The suture's uniform diameter and excellent flexibility enhance handling and knot security, making it a reliable choice for surgeons.
Absorption Profile
Monosyn Quick, a variant with a faster absorption profile, is ideal for situations requiring rapid healing, such as skin and mucosal closures. It retains 60-70% tensile strength at 5 days and completes absorption within 56 to 70 days, providing tailored performance for specific surgical needs.
Indications and Contraindications
Monosyn® is suitable for subcutaneous and intracutaneous sutures, mesh fixation, and closures in gastrointestinal and gynecological surgeries. It is not intended for use in cardiovascular, ophthalmic, or neurological tissues, nor for implant fixation. Surgeons are advised to avoid use in tissues under high tension or with poor blood supply.
Sizes and Configurations
The suture is available in various sizes, with thread lengths typically at 45cm and 70cm, and a range of needle types including reverse cutting and different circle cutting needles. Packaging options generally include boxes of 36, with some variants offering different pack sizes.
Sterilization and Compliance
Sterilized using ethylene oxide, Monosyn® complies with the standards of the European and United States Pharmacopoeia for synthetic absorbable sutures. It is intended for single use only and should be stored at room temperature, with adherence to expiry dates to ensure optimal performance.
Handling Precautions
Proper handling is crucial, with recommendations to secure knots effectively and manage needle use carefully. Potential adverse reactions include minimal inflammatory response, localized irritation, and in rare cases, suture extrusion or delayed absorption. By following these guidelines, Monosyn® provides a dependable solution for surgical wound management, aligning with B. Braun's commitment to quality and innovation in medical devices.
