Description
Monosyn® is an advanced absorbable monofilament suture designed by B. Braun for versatile use in soft tissue surgeries across both human and veterinary applications. Its synthetic composition ensures reliable performance, making it an ideal choice for procedures requiring mid-term wound support. However, it is not recommended for use in cardiovascular, ophthalmic, or neurological tissues.
Material Composition
Crafted from a copolymer blend of 72% glycolide, 14% ε-caprolactone, and 14% trimethylene carbonate, Monosyn® offers a smooth, uncoated monofilament structure. This design is available in both undyed (beige) and dyed (violet) forms, providing options to suit various surgical needs. Each suture is supplied sterile, adhering to stringent quality standards.
Suture Sizes and Needle Options
Monosyn® is available in a range of USP sizes from 7/0 to 2 (metric 0.5 to 5), and is provided in pre-cut lengths or on ligating reels. Surgeons can choose sutures with or without needles, with needle types including HR26, DS19, DS24, and HS26, offering flexibility for different surgical techniques. Box quantities vary, with options including 1, 2, or 3 dozen units.
Performance Characteristics
Monosyn® excels in maintaining approximately 50% of its original knot tensile strength for 13–14 days post-implantation, with complete absorption occurring within 60 to 90 days. Its high knot pull tensile strength, coupled with excellent handling and knot security, ensures dependable performance. The suture's smooth passage through tissue minimizes drag and reduces tearing, offering a significant advantage over braided multifilament sutures.
Biocompatibility and Inflammatory Response
The suture elicits only a mild inflammatory reaction and is metabolized by hydrolysis into glycolic acid, ensuring biocompatibility. This makes it suitable for a wide range of surgical applications, including general surgery, gynecology, urology, oral surgery, and more.
Storage and Handling
Proper storage at room temperature is essential, and resterilization is not advised. Awareness of potential adverse reactions, such as wound dehiscence or localized irritation, is important for optimal surgical outcomes.
Compliance and Standards
Monosyn® meets the rigorous requirements of both the European Pharmacopoeia and the United States Pharmacopoeia for sterile, synthetic absorbable monofilament sutures, with minor variations in suture diameter. This compliance underscores its quality and reliability in surgical settings.
