Description
Dafilon® by B. Braun is a non-absorbable, synthetic monofilament surgical suture designed for a wide range of medical applications. Crafted from polyamide 6/6.6, it is available in various colors including blue, black, and natural beige, providing versatility for different surgical needs.
Key Features
- Monofilament Structure: The uncoated monofilament design ensures minimal tissue drag, offering smooth handling and excellent adaptability to tissues.
- Pliability and Elasticity: Its soft and pliable nature allows for easy handling, while maintaining good knot security.
- Tissue Compatibility: Known for excellent histocompatibility, Dafilon® induces minimal inflammatory reaction, making it suitable for delicate procedures.
Performance
As a non-absorbable suture, Dafilon® retains its tensile strength over time, with a gradual reduction of about 15–20% per year. This characteristic makes it ideal for applications where long-term support is beneficial, such as in skin closure, plastic and reconstructive surgery, microsurgery, and ophthalmic surgery.
Indications
Dafilon® is intended for general soft tissue approximation and ligation, including use in cardiovascular, microsurgery, ophthalmic, and neurological procedures. It is also widely used in veterinary medicine, primarily for skin closure.
Contraindications
It is not recommended in scenarios where permanent suture strength is required, due to its gradual loss of tensile strength.
Sterilization and Packaging
The sutures are sterilized using gamma radiation and ethylene oxide gas, and are supplied in sterile packaging. They come in pre-cut lengths and ligating reels, either non-needled or with various stainless steel needles, packaged in boxes containing 1, 2, or 3 dozen sutures.
Storage Instructions
Store at room temperature and avoid extreme temperatures. Dafilon® is intended for single use only and should not be resterilized.
Regulatory Compliance
Dafilon® meets the stringent requirements of both European and United States Pharmacopeia for sterile, non-absorbable sutures, ensuring high standards of quality and safety.
Potential Adverse Effects
While generally well-tolerated, potential adverse effects may include wound dehiscence, calculi formation, infection, minimal acute inflammatory reaction, and local irritation. Proper handling and adherence to surgical protocols can mitigate these risks.
