Description
The BD Saf-T-Intima™ Safety System is an advanced closed catheter system designed for both intravenous and subcutaneous infusion therapy. It is particularly suited for various medical needs, including pain management, medication delivery, and rehydration therapy, making it ideal for use in palliative, geriatric, pediatric, and post-operative care settings.
Key Features
- Integrated Safety Mechanism: The system includes a telescoping needle shield to significantly reduce the risk of needlestick injuries and blood exposure.
- BD Vialon™ Catheter Biomaterial: This proprietary material allows for longer dwell times and minimizes the risk of phlebitis and site inflammation.
- Winged Design: Provides support and stabilization for comfortable insertion.
- Radiopaque Material: Enhances visibility during imaging.
Configurations and Compatibility
Available in various gauge sizes (18G, 20G, 22G, 24G) and lengths, the catheters are color-coded for easy identification. The system offers configurations with straight and Y-adapter ports, minimizing dead space volume to approximately 0.25 mL. It is compatible with Luer-Lok syringes and specific infusion pumps, though not with "smart sites."
Insertion and Maintenance
The catheter is inserted at a 20°–45° angle into subcutaneous tissue, with recommended sites including the subclavicular chest wall and anterior upper arms. Proper securing with a transparent dressing is advised, and the device can remain in place for up to 7–14 days if no complications arise.
Regular site inspection is crucial, with documentation as per clinical guidelines. Flushing after bolus doses and changing extension tubing with the cannula are necessary maintenance steps.
Benefits
The BD Saf-T-Intima™ system enhances patient comfort by reducing skin reactions and site inflammation compared to traditional winged steel needle sets. Its design increases dwell time and minimizes touch contamination, making it a preferred choice for subcutaneous access in adult protocols, especially in palliative care settings.
