Description
The Portex Blue Line Ultra tracheostomy tube system, developed by Smiths Medical, is engineered for both surgical and percutaneous placement. It is designed to maintain a clear airway, facilitate ventilation, assist with mucus removal, and support the gradual withdrawal of ventilatory support. This system is versatile, offering a range of sizes and configurations to meet diverse patient needs in both in-patient and out-patient settings.
Material and Design
Crafted from thermosensitive material, the tube is initially rigid for easy insertion and then softens at body temperature to conform comfortably to the patient’s airway. Its smooth, arc-shaped shaft with a tapered tip ensures easier placement and removal, minimizing disruption. The clear, anatomically-shaped flange enhances access during stoma care, while low-profile flange options provide discretion for long-term use.
Connectivity and Cannula System
A 15 mm bonded connector allows seamless attachment to ventilator breathing circuits, even without an inner cannula. The inner cannula system includes reusable, color-coded cannulae that are both fenestrated and non-fenestrated, allowing for easy identification and maintenance. This dual cannula design enables quick removal and replacement to maintain tube patency, with a cleaning brush provided for convenience.
Cuff Features
The Profile Soft-Seal cuff is designed to be soft, low-pressure, and high-volume, with reduced bulk for easier insertion and minimal trauma. Cuffed versions include an air-filled cuff with a blue pilot balloon, and cuff pressure should be maintained within 20–30 mmHg. The radiopaque nature of the tube allows for X-ray visibility and position confirmation.
Variants and Accessories
Variants such as the Blue Line Ultra Suctionaid allow for the removal of secretions from above the cuff, reducing the risk of ventilator-associated pneumonia. The system offers fenestrated and non-fenestrated versions, as well as cuffed and uncuffed options. Accessories compatible with the system include speaking valves, decannulation caps, and heat moisture exchangers, with tube holders and cleaning brushes included in kits.
Available Sizes
The tube is available in various sizes, with detailed dimensions provided for inner and outer diameters, length, and cuff outer diameter. This comprehensive sizing ensures a suitable fit for a wide range of clinical requirements.
Maintenance Guidelines
Regular maintenance involves removing and cleaning the inner cannula every 2–4 hours or as needed. Cleaning can be done by rinsing under running water or soaking in mild detergent, using the provided brush, and allowing the cannula to air dry. Replacement of the inner cannula is recommended every two weeks.
Safety Instructions
Users are advised not to use the product if the packaging is damaged, not to resterilize, and to store it in a cool, dry place. These guidelines ensure the safe and effective use of the Portex Blue Line Ultra tracheostomy tube system.
