Description

The MICROCUFF Paediatric Endotracheal Tube by Avanos is a specialized medical device designed to enhance pediatric airway management during intubation and ventilation. Unlike downsized adult tubes, this tube is specifically engineered to accommodate the unique anatomical features of pediatric patients, ensuring a safer and more effective fit.

Innovative Cuff Design

  • Material: The tube features a micro-thin polyurethane cuff membrane, only 10 microns thick, providing a high volume, low pressure (HVLP) inflation system. This design ensures an effective tracheal seal at ultra-low pressure, averaging 11 cm H₂O, which minimizes the risk of tracheal trauma and micro-aspiration.
  • Benefits: The cuff conforms seamlessly to the tracheal wall, reducing the likelihood of ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) and the need for tube replacement or re-intubation. The cuff-free subglottic zone allows for improved anatomical placement, while increased puncture strength and burst pressure offer enhanced durability.

Tube Construction

  • Single-Use and Sterile: The tube is disposable, free from natural rubber latex and DEHP, and safe for use in MRI environments (MR conditional).
  • Design Variants: Available in Magill (oral/nasal) and Oral Curved (RAE) types, with a blue vent connector for easy identification.
  • Markings: Features centimeter depth markings, a black intubation depth mark above the cuff, and four precision bands to aid in optimal placement. A radiopaque line enhances visibility on imaging.

Sizing Options

  • Magill Type: Sizes range from 3.0 mm to 7.0 mm internal diameter.
  • Oral Curved Type: Sizes range from 3.0 mm to 6.5 mm internal diameter.
  • Guidance: Suitable for term infants weighing ≥3 kg up to children aged 14 to <16 years.

Instructions for Use

  • Pre-use Testing: Includes testing the cuff, pilot balloon, and valve. Proper placement involves aligning the black intubation depth mark with the vocal cords.
  • Cuff Management: After intubation, ensure an audible air leak at ≤20 cm H₂O airway pressure with the cuff deflated. Inflate the cuff to the minimal effective sealing pressure, not exceeding 20 cm H₂O, and continuously monitor pressure.
  • Extubation: Deflate the cuff before removal and discard the tube after single use.

Designed for Safety and Efficiency

This paediatric-specific design aims to reduce tracheal trauma, minimize aspiration risks, and support efficient ventilation and monitoring. It is also compatible with minimal and low flow anesthesia, providing an optimal fit and safety for pediatric patients.
