Description
The Avanos MICROCUFF paediatric endotracheal tube is a cuffed airway device for neonatal and paediatric patients, designed for use by trained clinicians in operating theatre, intensive care, and emergency settings. It is available in two variants—Oral/Nasal Magill and Oral Curved (RAE)—to support common clinical approaches and patient positioning.
Design and materials
- Micro‑thin polyurethane (approximately 10 μm) cuff with a high‑volume, low‑pressure profile
- Short, cylindrical cuff positioned to seal within the trachea rather than the larynx
- Short cuff‑to‑tip distance to help position the cuff below the vocal cords when the vocal cord marker is aligned at the cords
- Cuff adds minimal outer‑diameter increase at the deflated level
- Supplied without a Murphy eye
Placement and verification features
- Centimetre depth scale along the tube
- Black vocal cord marker just proximal to the cuff
- Four precision placement/verification bands to aid depth assessment
- Continuous radiopaque line for X‑ray visibility
Performance characteristics
- Effective airway sealing typically achieved at low cuff pressures; in children aged 2–4 years with a 4.0 mm ID tube, sealing around 11 cm H2O has been reported shortly after intubation
- Cuff membrane withstands high burst pressures (>800 cm H2O in manufacturer testing)
- HVLP cuff design intended to achieve an effective seal while distributing pressure over a larger surface area
