Description
What it is
A low-profile, button-style enteral access device from Avanos Medical (MIC-KEY) designed to deliver nutrition, liquids, and medications directly to the small intestine (distal duodenum/proximal jejunum). Constructed of medical‑grade silicone, it features an internal inflatable retention balloon and an external retention bolster for secure, discreet wear.
Intended use
- For patients requiring jejunal feeding only.
- Appropriate when gastric feeding is not tolerated or contraindicated (e.g., impaired gastric emptying, severe gastroesophageal reflux, gastric outlet obstruction, aspiration risk, post‑esophagectomy/gastrectomy).
- Prescription use only (Rx only).
Ports and connectors
- Single access port labeled “Jejunal.”
- Proximal anti‑reflux valve; an extension set is required to open the valve for feeding or medication. Do not inject directly into the valve.
- Detachable extension sets allow the button to be concealed when not in use.
- Connector options: ENFit or legacy non‑ENFit (catheter‑tip). Use compatible MIC‑KEY J extension sets with SECUR‑LOK/Lock‑and‑Key style secure locking.
Design features
- Low‑profile external bolster for a discreet profile.
- Internal silicone retention balloon.
- Trimmable, tapered distal tip to tailor length.
- Radiopaque stripe for imaging and centimeter markings to help verify external length.
Configurations and sizes
- Outer diameter (French): 14 Fr or 18 Fr.
- Jejunal length: 82 cm (typical across configurations).
- Stoma length options (cm): 0.8, 1.0, 1.2, 1.5, 1.7, 2.0, 2.3, 2.5, 2.7, 3.0, 3.5, 4.0, 4.5.
- Available as individual tubes and in kits that may include ENFit‑compatible extension sets (continuous and/or bolus styles).
Placement and replacement
- May be placed percutaneously under fluoroscopic or endoscopic guidance, surgically, or used as a replacement through an established stoma tract.
- Selection of French size and stoma length is based on clinical assessment/imaging. Follow the device Instructions for Use (IFU) for placement and management.
Sterility and labeling
- Sterile (gamma irradiated).
- Rx only.
Care and maintenance essentials
- Balloon medium: Use only sterile or distilled water; do not use saline, tap water, or air. Balloon fill volumes vary by tube size—refer to the IFU. Check balloon volume periodically (e.g., weekly) and restore as prescribed. Stabilize the tube during inflation/deflation to prevent dislodgement.
- Handling: Do not rotate jejunal tubes; rotation can torque the tube and cause retraction. Keep the extension set locked during feeding.
- Medication administration: Prefer liquid medications. If solids are used, verify they can be crushed and disperse fully in water. Do not crush enteric‑coated medications. Do not mix medications with formula. Flush with water before, between, and after medications and after use to help prevent clogging.
- Hygiene: Clean the external tube and ports with warm water and mild soap; rinse and dry well. Clean the skin around the stoma daily with mild soap and water using a soft, lint‑free cloth. Avoid rotating the external bolster.
