Description

The Avanos MIC-KEY Low-Profile Jejunal (J) Feeding Tube is a button-style enteral access device that provides direct access to the jejunum, bypassing the stomach to deliver tube feeds, water, and medications. It is intended for patients who cannot tolerate gastric feeding or are at elevated risk due to impaired gastric emptying, severe gastroesophageal reflux, gastric outlet obstruction, aspiration risk, or following esophagectomy/gastrectomy.

Design and key features

  • Medical-grade silicone construction.
  • Internal inflatable retention balloon helps prevent unintentional dislodgement.
  • Fixed external low-profile retention disc/bolster helps minimize migration back into the stomach.
  • Single access port labeled Jejunal; no separate medication port.
  • Anti-reflux valve in the feeding port; an extension set is required to open the valve and administer feeds, liquids, or medications.
  • MIC-KEY SECUR-LOK lock-and-key interface with orientation markings; connected extensions swivel for comfort.
  • Radiopaque stripe and external centimeter markings for verification of position and external length.
  • Tapered, clinician-trimmable distal tip to tailor length as needed.
  • Low-profile, skin-level design; extension set detaches when not in use.

Connections and compatibility

  • Available in configurations supporting ENFit or non-ENFit (catheter-tip) systems; patient-side interface is the MIC-KEY port with SECUR-LOK attachment.
  • Use only MIC-KEY extension sets that mate with the MIC-KEY port; extensions enable continuous or bolus feeding and medication administration.

Sizing and options

  • Outer diameter (French size): 14 Fr or 18 Fr.
  • Stoma lengths (cm): 0.8, 1.0, 1.2, 1.5, 1.7, 2.0, 2.3, 2.5, 2.7, 3.0, 3.5, 4.0, 4.5.
  • Jejunal limb length: 82 cm measured from the distal aspect of the internal balloon to the tip; distal segment may be trimmed by a clinician to meet patient-specific requirements.

Placement and replacement

  • May be placed percutaneously under fluoroscopic or endoscopic guidance, surgically, or used as a replacement in an established stoma tract. Selection of French size and stoma length is based on clinical assessment.

Care and handling highlights

  • Do not rotate jejunal (J) or gastro-jejunal (GJ) low-profile tubes; rotation can cause torque and retraction into the stomach.
  • Balloon management: fill with sterile or distilled water only; check volume regularly per Instructions for Use/clinician guidance and refill to the prescribed amount. Stabilize the tube during inflation/deflation to avoid accidental removal.
  • Hygiene: wash hands before handling; clean the external tube and port covers with warm water and mild soap; rinse thoroughly. Clean the feeding port and anti-reflux valve area; do not insert medications or formula directly into the valve—administer via the extension set.
  • Connection technique: align orientation marks and lock the extension during feeding; disconnect per the IFU. Use MIC-KEY extension sets only.

Notes and limitations

  • Jejunal feeding only; no gastric port for decompression.
  • Follow the manufacturer’s Instructions for Use and clinician guidance for selection, placement, and maintenance.
