Description
The Avanos MIC-KEY Low-Profile Gastric-Jejunal (GJ) Feeding Tube is a skin-level “button” device placed via a gastric stoma with the distal limb positioned in the jejunum. It provides two separate lumens to enable jejunal feeding and simultaneous gastric decompression/venting. Intended for pediatric and adult patients; prescription use only. Available in ENFit and non-ENFit configurations; to be used with MIC-KEY extension sets.
Design and features
- Low-profile external bolster with an internal inflatable retention balloon.
- Three access points: JEJUNAL (feeding), GASTRIC (decompression/venting), and BAL (balloon). JEJUNAL and GASTRIC ports include one-way anti-reflux valves that open when a MIC-KEY extension set is attached; ports are labeled and feature black orientation lines for correct alignment.
- Weighted jejunal segment with multiple distal exit ports for distribution of feeds; tapered distal tip and radiopaque stripe for visualization.
- Medical-grade silicone; latex-free; sterile (gamma sterilized); single-use.
- No dedicated medication port; medications are delivered via the jejunal or gastric port per clinical direction.
Connectivity and compatibility
- Offered with ENFit connectors (enteral-only) or catheter-tip connectors (non-ENFit), depending on configuration.
- Use MIC-KEY extension sets only: Continuous (pump) and Bolus types.
Sizes and options
- French sizes: 14, 16, 18, 22 Fr.
- Jejunal lengths: 15, 22, 30, 45 cm (availability varies by diameter and stoma length).
- Stoma (shaft) lengths: approximately 1.0–7.0 cm in select increments (availability varies).
Typical kit contents
- MIC-KEY GJ Continuous Feed Extension Set (~12 in).
- MIC-KEY GJ Bolus Feed Extension Set (~12 in).
- 35 mL syringe (venting, priming, flushing).
- 6 mL Luer slip syringe (balloon inflation/deflation with sterile or distilled water).
Use highlights
- Align black orientation lines on the extension set and the selected port; push in and turn clockwise about three-quarters of a turn until slight resistance. Keep locked during feeding.
- To disconnect, rotate counterclockwise until lines re-align and gently detach; cap ports afterward.
- Flush the tube and extension sets before and after every use to help prevent clogging.
Balloon inflation (sterile or distilled water only)
- Jejunal 15/22/30 cm variants: recommended 3 mL; maximum 5 mL.
- Jejunal 45 cm variants: recommended 7 mL; maximum 10 mL.
Feeding and decompression
- Jejunal feeding: connect an extension set to the JEJUNAL port; flush per clinical direction. For continuous feeds, attach to an enteral feeding pump set.
- Gastric decompression/venting: connect a Bolus Extension Set to the GASTRIC port. Use gravity drainage or low intermittent suction only; do not use continuous or high intermittent suction.
Care, fit, and replacement
- Clean the external tube and base with warm water and mild soap; rinse and dry thoroughly. Do not rotate the external bolster.
- Clean JEJUNAL, GASTRIC, and BAL ports with a cotton-tipped applicator or soft cloth; keep anti-reflux valves free of residue. Do not inject formula or medications directly into a port valve—always use an appropriate extension set.
- Clean skin around the stoma daily; wash hands before handling; use only water-soluble lubricant if needed.
- External base should rest about 1–2 mm above the skin; contact a clinician if too tight/loose or with weight change or stoma issues. Stoma length is clinician-measured; replacement timing is clinician-directed. Extension sets are typically replaced every few weeks.
- Follow the product Instructions for Use and clinician guidance for setup, use, inflation volumes, and maintenance.
