Description
Overview
The Avanos MIC-KEY Low-Profile Gastric-Jejunal (GJ) Feeding Tube is a skin-level, button-style enteral device placed via a gastric stoma with the distal limb positioned in the jejunum. It supports post-pyloric feeding while enabling simultaneous gastric decompression or venting through a separate lumen. For pediatric and adult patients; prescription device.
Design and Materials
- Internal retention balloon with a low-profile external bolster for stabilization
- Medical-grade silicone construction; latex-free
- Sterile (gamma sterilized); single-use
- Low-profile head designed for discreet wear and secure connection
Ports and Connectivity
- Three access points on the head:
- JEJUNAL port (feeding)
- GASTRIC port (decompression/venting)
- BAL port (balloon inflation/deflation)
- One-way valves in JEJUNAL and GASTRIC ports; valves open only when the appropriate MIC-KEY extension set is attached
- No dedicated medication port; medications are delivered via J or G port per clinical direction
- Available with ENFit connectors; also offered in versions with catheter-tip (non-ENFit) connectors
- Low-profile GJ tubes require an extension set to open the valves for delivery of feeds, liquids, and medications
- ENFit kits include MIC-KEY ENFit extension sets for continuous/pump and bolus feeding (refer to IFU for specific components)
Key Functional Features
- Weighted jejunal portion to help maintain position
- Multiple jejunal exit ports for distribution
- Radiopaque stripe for imaging visibility
- Tapered distal tip to aid placement
- Clearly marked G and J ports
Sizes and Options
- French sizes: 14, 16, 18, 22 Fr
- Jejunal lengths: 15, 22, 30, 45 cm (availability varies by Fr size)
- Stoma lengths: approximately 1.0–7.0 cm in defined increments (availability varies)
Use and Handling Guidance (refer to current IFU)
- Balloon: Inflate with distilled or sterile water only; do not use saline, tap water, or air. Verify balloon volume periodically per IFU and tube size. Stabilize the tube during inflation/deflation to avoid dislodgement.
- Positioning: Keep head/torso elevated at least 30 degrees during feeds and for about 1 hour after.
- Rotation: Do not rotate jejunal or gastric-jejunal tubes to prevent torque or retraction into the stomach.
- Medications: Prefer liquid formulations. If tablets are used, confirm they can be crushed; mix only with water and flush with water before and between medications. Do not crush enteric‑coated medications.
- Decompression: Use the gastric port for venting via gravity or low intermittent suction. Avoid continuous or high suction. Attach the appropriate extension set to open the valve; do not inject formula or medications into a closed valve.
Accessory Compatibility
- Compatible with the FARRELL Decompression System for venting excess gas while allowing feeds to return by gravity; use per device IFUs.
Important Notes
- Dimensions and specific options vary; always confirm selection and instructions in the current Avanos IFU.
- For pediatric and adult use as prescribed by a clinician.
