Description
Overview
- Low-profile, skin-level, double-lumen enteral device placed through a gastric stoma with the distal limb positioned in the jejunum.
- Supports simultaneous jejunal feeding and gastric decompression/venting.
- Suitable for pediatric and adult patients.
Ports and functions
- JEJUNAL port: delivers nutrition into the small intestine (post-pyloric).
- GASTRIC port: decompression/venting as clinically directed (e.g., gravity drainage or low intermittent suction).
- BAL (balloon) port: for inflation/deflation of the internal retention balloon only.
- One-way valves in JEJUNAL and GASTRIC ports open when a MIC-KEY extension set is attached.
- No dedicated medication port; medications may be administered via the jejunal or gastric lumen per clinical direction.
Design and retention
- Internal inflatable balloon for retention with a low-profile external bolster.
- Weighted jejunal section helps maintain jejunal placement.
- Multiple jejunal exit ports for flow distribution.
- Radiopaque stripe for imaging confirmation.
- Tapered distal tip to aid placement.
Connectivity and compatibility
- Uses MIC-KEY extension sets; brand-specific and not interchangeable with other low-profile button brands.
- ENFit standard at the feeding-line side of the extension; avoid overtightening ENFit connections.
- Attachment technique: align the black marks on the button and extension, push in firmly while holding both, then turn clockwise up to three-quarters of a turn to lock; twist to unlock. To disconnect, hold the center of the button and pull straight out from the hard plastic connector.
- Offered in ENFit configurations; confirm the required connector configuration for the intended system.
Sizes and options
- French sizes: 14, 16, 18, 22 Fr.
- Jejunal lengths: 15, 22, 30, 45 cm (measured from the distal aspect of the retention balloon to the tip).
- Stoma lengths: approximately 1.0–7.0 cm (availability varies by French size).
Handling and maintenance
- Do not rotate GJ tubes (rotation applies to gastrostomy tubes, not GJ tubes).
- Do not use the balloon inflation valve for food or medication; use only the designated feeding/drainage ports.
- Balloon volumes are not checked routinely; if increased leakage or looseness is noted, check per device guidance using a 10 mL luer slip syringe.
- For flushing, use warm water with a gentle pulsatile push–pull motion; do not use excessive force and do not use carbonated beverages.
Troubleshooting
- Leakage may result from an internal valve issue, constipation/slow gastric emptying, a plugged port, or worn extension tip/locking notch. Management may include treating constipation, slowing feeds, and flushing as above. If unresolved, keep the cap closed or leave an extension plugged into the port until assessed.
- If the jejunal limb migrates back into the stomach, or the tube splits above the jejunum, cease feeds if gastric feeding is unsafe and arrange assessment/replacement.
Materials, sterility, and usage
- Medical-grade silicone; not made with natural rubber latex.
- Sterile (gamma sterilized).
- Single-use only; do not re-use, re-process, or re-sterilize.
- Prescription device (Rx only).
Kit contents
- GJ feeding tube plus MIC-KEY ENFit extension sets for continuous and/or bolus feeding (contents may vary by configuration).
