Description
Overview
The Avanos MIC-KEY Low-Profile Gastric-Jejunal (GJ) Feeding Tube is a skin-level, double-lumen enteral “button” placed via a gastric stoma with the distal limb positioned in the jejunum. It enables simultaneous post‑pyloric feeding and gastric decompression in pediatric and adult patients.
Ports and functions
- JEJUNAL port: delivers nutrition/medications into the small intestine; one‑way valve opens when a MIC-KEY extension set is attached.
- GASTRIC port: decompression/venting via gravity or low intermittent suction; one‑way valve opens with extension set.
- BAL port: balloon inflation/deflation for internal retention.
- No dedicated medication port; administer medications via jejunal or gastric ports per clinical direction.
Retention and design
- Internal inflatable silicone balloon with low‑profile external bolster.
- Balloon fill guidance: 15/22/30 cm J-length—3 ml recommended (max 5 ml); 45 cm J-length—7 ml recommended (max 10 ml).
- Low‑profile head with clearly marked ports and one‑way (anti‑reflux) valves.
- Weighted tungsten jejunal limb to help maintain jejunal placement.
- Multiple jejunal and gastric exit ports for flow distribution.
- Radiopaque stripe and tapered distal tip to aid placement and patency.
Connections and accessories
- Uses MIC-KEY extension sets with keyed, SECUR‑LOK style connectors for orientation and locking.
- Available with ENFit connections; select models available in non‑ENFit (catheter tip) configurations.
Intended use and placement
- For post‑pyloric feeding with separate gastric decompression/venting.
- Typical scenarios: intestinal motility disorders, gastric outlet obstruction, severe GERD, aspiration risk, and post‑esophagectomy or gastrectomy requiring jejunal feeding.
- Suitable for endoscopic or radiologic placement; may be used as an initial tube (with appropriate introducer kit) or as a replacement in an established tract.
Sizes and options
- French sizes: 14, 16, 18, 22 Fr.
- Jejunal lengths: 15, 22, 30, 45 cm (measured from distal aspect of balloon to tip; availability varies by French size).
- Stoma lengths: approximately 1.0–7.0 cm (availability varies by diameter/configuration).
Materials and biocompatibility
- Medical‑grade silicone tube with radiopaque/weighting components (e.g., barium sulfate, tungsten), plus polyether imide, polycarbonate, and stainless‑steel spring as applicable.
- Extension sets: PVC with citrate softener and ABS; clamp: polypropylene.
- Not formulated with natural rubber latex, DEHP, DBP, or BBP.
Sterility and use conditions
- Gamma sterilized; single‑use only (do not re‑use, re‑process, or re‑sterilize).
- Prescription use (Rx only).
Contraindications and cautions
- Contraindications include ascites, colonic interposition, portal hypertension, peritonitis, and morbid obesity.
- For gastric decompression use gravity or low intermittent suction only; do not use continuous or high intermittent suction.
- Inflate balloon only with sterile or distilled water; stabilize tube during inflation/deflation to avoid dislodgement.
