Description
Overview
A low-profile, skin-level, double-lumen enteral feeding device, the Avanos MIC-KEY Low-Profile Gastric-Jejunal (GJ) Feeding Tube Kit enables simultaneous post-pyloric (jejunal) feeding and gastric decompression/venting via separate lumens. Suitable for pediatric and adult patients, it is intended for endoscopic or radiologic placement and may be used as an initial tube (with an appropriate introducer) or as a replacement. Prescription device (Rx only).
Intended use
- Provides jejunal feeding while allowing gastric decompression/venting.
- Supports administration of water and medications per clinician direction.
Design and ports
- Low-profile button with external bolster and internal inflatable retention balloon.
- Three access points: JEJUNAL (feeding), GASTRIC (decompression/venting), BAL (balloon inflation/deflation).
- One-way valves in JEJUNAL and GASTRIC ports open when MIC-KEY ENFit extension sets are attached.
- Weighted jejunal portion (tungsten) to help maintain distal placement; multiple jejunal exit ports for feeding.
- Radiopaque stripe for imaging visibility; tapered distal tip to aid placement; clearly marked G and J ports.
- No dedicated medication port; medications are delivered via the jejunal or gastric port as directed by the care team.
Connectivity and kit contents
- ENFit connectivity; extension sets are required to access/open the valves.
- Includes MIC-KEY ENFit Extension Set (right-angle, double ENFit) for continuous feeding and MIC-KEY ENFit Bolus Extension Set (straight, single ENFit), each ~30 cm, with SECUR-LOK connectors and clamps/caps.
- 6 mL Luer-slip syringe, 35 mL female ENFit syringe, and gauze pads included.
Materials and biocompatibility
- Tube: medical-grade silicone; components include polyether imide, polycarbonate, radiopaque additive (e.g., barium sulfate), stainless steel spring.
- Extension sets: PVC (citrate plasticizer) and ABS; clamp polypropylene.
- Not made with natural rubber latex; not formulated with DEHP/DBP/BBP.
Sizes and options
- Outer diameter: 14, 16, 18, 22 Fr.
- Jejunal lengths: 15, 22, 30, 45 cm (availability varies by diameter).
- Stoma lengths: approximately 1.0–7.0 cm in increments (availability varies).
- Measurement note: jejunal length is measured from the distal aspect of the retention balloon to the catheter tip.
Sterility, placement, and use
- Sterile, gamma sterilized; single-use only—do not reprocess or re-sterilize.
- Intended for endoscopic or radiologic placement; stabilize the tube during balloon inflation/deflation.
Clinical context
- Indications (examples): intolerance of gastric feeding, intestinal dysmotility, gastric outlet obstruction, severe GERD, high aspiration risk, post-esophagectomy/gastrectomy (per clinician judgment).
- Contraindications (examples): ascites, colonic interposition, portal hypertension, peritonitis, morbid obesity (refer to IFU for full list).
Operational notes and cautions
- Fill retention balloon with sterile/distilled water only; check and maintain balloon volume per IFU.
- Do not rotate gastric-jejunal tubes, as rotation can retract the jejunal limb.
- Access requires appropriate MIC-KEY ENFit extension sets.
Regulatory, storage, and shelf life
- CE-marked medical device (Class IIb); prescription use only.
- Store in a cool, dry place away from heat/radiation; typical shelf life 2 years from date of manufacture.
