Description
The Avanos MIC-KEY Low-Profile Gastric-Jejunal (GJ) Feeding Tube is a skin-level “button” enteral device placed through a gastric stoma with the distal limb positioned in the jejunum. It is intended for pediatric and adult patients who require simultaneous post-pyloric jejunal feeding and gastric decompression/venting.
Access ports and external components
- JEJUNAL port: For enteral feeding; a one-way valve opens when a MIC-KEY extension set is attached.
- GASTRIC port: For decompression/venting; a one-way valve opens with a MIC-KEY extension set. Medications may be administered via jejunal or gastric port per clinical direction; no dedicated medication port.
- BAL port: For inflation/deflation of the internal retention balloon.
- Low-profile external head with detachable extension sets that can be disconnected between feeds for comfort.
Materials and construction
- Medical-grade, high-clarity silicone; latex-free.
- Internal silicone retention balloon for secure placement.
- Radiopaque, weighted jejunal segment and radiopaque stripe for imaging visibility.
- Multiple jejunal exit ports and gastric lumen openings to support flow and help minimize clogging.
- Tapered distal tip to aid placement and high columnar strength to help maintain jejunal position.
Connectivity and kit
- MIC-KEY extension sets quarter-turn lock to the button via the Secur-Lok interface.
- ENFit connectivity is provided through the included extension sets, available for continuous and bolus feeding.
- A single extension set style is compatible across all tube sizes.
Sizes and selection
- French sizes: 14, 16, 18, 22.
- Jejunal lengths (size-dependent): 15 cm, 22 cm, 30 cm, 45 cm.
- Stoma (stem) lengths: approximately 1.0–7.0 cm; buttons are sized by stem length and tube caliber.
Sterility and use conditions
- Sterile (gamma sterilized); single-use; prescription device (Rx only).
Balloon inflation and handling
- Inflate the internal balloon with sterile water only (do not use saline).
- Pretest balloon inflation/deflation prior to placement.
- Use the fill volume specified on the device labeling.
Placement and replacement considerations
- Placed through a gastric stoma with the distal limb positioned in the jejunum.
- Exchange/replacement of GJ tubes requires endoscopic or fluoroscopic guidance; not intended for blind bedside replacement.
Design context
- Low-profile, skin-level design helps reduce accidental pulling and can improve comfort, often preferred in pediatric use.
- Part of the MIC-KEY Low-Profile Feeding Tube family (Gastric, Gastro-Jejunal, and Jejunal variants).
