Description
A low-profile, double-lumen gastric-jejunal (GJ) enteral access device designed to sit at skin level ("button" style). Placed through a gastric stoma with the distal limb positioned in the jejunum, it supports post-pyloric feeding while allowing gastric venting/decompression. Part of the MIC-KEY system from Avanos Medical, it is suitable for pediatric and adult patients as clinically indicated.
Intended use and functions
- JEJUNAL port (JEJUNAL): Continuous or bolus enteral feeding and medication delivery as directed.
- GASTRIC port (GASTRIC): Venting/decompression and medications only per clinical direction. Use gravity drainage or low intermittent suction; do not use continuous or high suction.
- BAL port (BAL): Inflation/deflation of the internal retention balloon.
Design and key features
- Low-profile external bolster designed to rest just above the skin (~1–2 mm). Do not rotate the external bolster or device.
- Internal inflatable retention balloon (balloon-retained design).
- Separate gastric and jejunal lumens with clearly labeled external ports.
- One-way, anti-reflux valves in GASTRIC and JEJUNAL ports; valves open when a MIC-KEY extension set is attached. Keep valves clean and do not inject formula/medication directly into the port valve without an attached extension set.
- Weighted tungsten jejunal limb to help maintain position; multiple jejunal exit ports; radiopaque stripe; tapered distal tip.
Connectivity and operation
- Uses MIC-KEY extension sets only; ENFit versions available (non-ENFit variants exist by configuration). Extension sets are cross-compatible across tube sizes.
- Connection: Align the black orientation lines on the extension set and selected port, then turn clockwise to lock until slight resistance (about 3/4 turn). Do not rotate past the stop; keep locked during feeding.
- Disconnection: Turn counter-clockwise until the black lines realign, then detach and cap ports.
Sizes and options
- French sizes: 14, 16, 18, 22 Fr.
- Jejunal lengths: 15, 22, 30, 45 cm (measured from the distal aspect of the balloon to the catheter tip).
- Stoma length options (size-dependent): approximately 1.0–7.0 cm.
Kit contents (typical)
- MIC-KEY GJ Continuous Feed Extension Set, 12 in.
- MIC-KEY GJ Bolus Feed Extension Set, 12 in (use for decompression/venting).
- MIC-KEY GJ Patient Use & Care Guide.
- 35 mL syringe (venting/priming/flushing extension sets).
- 6 mL Luer Slip syringe (balloon inflation/deflation with sterile or distilled water).
- Stoma Measuring Device not included. Actual contents may vary; refer to labeling.
Balloon inflation guidance
- Inflate balloon only with sterile or distilled water; do not use saline, tap water, or air. Do not overinflate.
- Typical fill volumes: 3 mL recommended (5 mL maximum) for 15, 22, or 30 cm jejunal lengths; 7 mL recommended (10 mL maximum) for 45 cm.
- Stabilize the tube during inflation/deflation; check balloon volume regularly and refill to the prescribed amount.
Care and maintenance
- Flush the tube and extension sets with water before/after each use and between medications. Prefer liquid medications; do not crush enteric‑coated medications.
- Clean the external tube and ports with warm water and mild soap; rinse and dry. Use a cotton‑tipped applicator/soft cloth to remove residue from JEJUNAL, GASTRIC, and BAL ports.
- Clean skin around the stoma daily; use only water‑soluble lubricant if needed.
- Avoid pulling or manipulating the tube; wash hands before handling.
Placement and replacement
- Placed by a clinician via endoscopic or radiologic procedure; not intended for home replacement.
- Clinician determines stoma length using a measuring device and re-measures if fit changes (e.g., weight change, tight/loose fit, discomfort/irritation).
- Replacement interval is clinician-directed; extension sets are typically replaced every few weeks per IFU.
Materials and sterility
- Medical‑grade silicone; latex‑free; sterile (gamma sterilized); single‑use; prescription device (Rx only).
