Description
The Avanos MIC-KEY Low-Profile Gastric-Jejunal (GJ) Feeding Tube is a skin-level button designed for pediatric and adult patients who require post-pyloric (jejunal) feeding with simultaneous gastric decompression/venting. It provides enteral access for nutrition, hydration, and medications as directed; the jejunal limb delivers to the small intestine, while the gastric lumen allows decompression/venting and medications only per clinical direction.
Intended Use
- For patients requiring jejunal feeding with concurrent gastric decompression/venting.
- Supports delivery of enteral nutrition, liquids, and medications as directed by the care team.
Design and Retention
- Low-profile external button with an external bolster; distal limb passes through the stomach into the jejunum.
- Internal inflatable balloon for retention; inflate with sterile or distilled water only. Check and maintain prescribed volume routinely, and stabilize the tube during inflation/deflation to avoid dislodgement.
Ports and Operation
- Three external ports: JEJUNAL (feeding/medications), GASTRIC (decompression/venting; medications per clinical direction), BAL (balloon inflation/deflation).
- One-way anti-reflux valves in JEJUNAL and GASTRIC ports open when a MIC-KEY extension set is attached; do not inject directly into the valves. No dedicated medication port.
- Secur-Lok keyed, twist-to-lock interface. Both JEJUNAL and GASTRIC ports accept the same MIC-KEY extension connector. Extension sets are available for continuous/pump or bolus feeding; kits may include both.
Materials and Construction
- Medical-grade, high-clarity silicone; latex-free.
- Tungsten-weighted, radiopaque jejunal portion with high column strength to help maintain jejunal position.
- Radiopaque stripe for visualization; tapered distal tip.
- Multiple jejunal exit ports designed to promote flow and help minimize clogging.
Connectivity
- Available in ENFit and non-ENFit (catheter-tip) configurations with enteral-only connections.
Sizes and Options
- French sizes: 14, 16, 18, 22 Fr.
- Jejunal limb lengths: 15, 22, 30, 45 cm (availability varies by size).
- Stoma lengths: approximately 1.0–7.0 cm in multiple increments.
- Typical balloon fill guidance: up to 30 cm jejunal length commonly 3 mL (max 5 mL); 45 cm commonly 7 mL (max 10 mL). Always follow the product IFU for the specific tube.
Decompression and Venting
- GASTRIC port supports venting by gravity or low intermittent suction; do not use continuous or high intermittent suction.
- Compatible with the FARRELL Decompression System for venting; any formula that enters the bag should be gravity-fed back to the patient as directed. Attaching a syringe to the extension set before the FARRELL bag can help reduce pressure.
Handling and Care Cautions
- Do not rotate the GJ tube or external bolster; rotation can torque the jejunal segment and risk retraction into the stomach.
- Maintain the external base approximately 1–2 mm above the skin; avoid pulling or excessive manipulation.
- Flush tube and extension sets before and after use; keep ports and anti-reflux valves clean. Use only water-soluble lubricant when needed.
Sterility and Selection
- Sterile (gamma sterilized), single-use, prescription device (Rx only).
- Stoma length is determined by a clinician; reassess fit if body habitus changes or if the external base feels too tight, too loose, or causes irritation.
