Description
The MIC-KEY Low-Profile Gastric-Jejunal (GJ) Feeding Tube from Avanos is a skin-level enteral device placed through a gastric stoma with the distal limb positioned in the jejunum. Retained by an internal inflatable balloon and a low-profile external bolster (button), it supports simultaneous jejunal feeding and gastric decompression/venting for pediatric and adult patients.
Ports and functions
- JEJUNAL (J) port: Post-pyloric feeding; medications may be administered if directed by the care team.
- GASTRIC (G) port: Decompression/venting via gravity or low intermittent suction; avoid continuous or high intermittent suction.
- BAL port: Balloon inflation/deflation only.
- One-way anti-reflux valves in the J and G ports open when an appropriate MIC-KEY extension set is attached; the device does not include a dedicated medication port.
Connectivity and compatibility
- Available in versions compatible with ENFit or legacy catheter-tip feed set connectors.
- ENFit “Kit” variants include MIC-KEY ENFit extension sets for continuous/pump and bolus feeding.
- Use MIC-KEY extension sets to ensure valve activation and connector compatibility.
Key design features
- Clearly marked G and J ports; extension sets engage with a clockwise turn until resistance.
- Weighted jejunal portion to help maintain post-pyloric placement.
- Multiple jejunal exit ports and a tapered distal tip to support flow.
- Radiopaque stripe for imaging visibility.
- Low-profile external bolster for skin-level profile.
Materials and regulatory
- Medical-grade silicone; latex-free.
- Sterile (gamma sterilized).
- Single-use; prescription device (Rx only).
Sizes and options
- Outer diameter (French): 14, 16, 18, 22.
- Jejunal lengths (cm): 15, 22, 30, 45.
- Stoma (shaft) lengths (cm): approximately 1.0 to 7.0 in multiple increments (e.g., 1.0, 1.2, 1.5, 1.7, 2.0, 2.3, 2.5, 2.7, 3.0, 3.5, 4.0, 4.5, 5.0, 5.5, 6.0, 6.5, 7.0); availability varies by diameter.
Balloon inflation guidance
- Use only sterile or distilled water.
- Recommended fill volumes by jejunal length: 15/22/30 cm = 3 mL (maximum 5 mL); 45 cm = 7 mL (maximum 10 mL).
- Do not overinflate; stabilize the tube during inflation/deflation.
Operation and maintenance
- Attach an extension set to open the gastric or jejunal port valves; do not push formula or medication directly through a closed valve.
- Do not rotate GJ tubes; rotation can torque the tube and contribute to retraction into the stomach.
- Flush the feeding tube and extension sets per clinical guidance to reduce clogging.
