Description
The Avanos MIC-KEY Low-Profile Gastric-Jejunal (GJ) Feeding Tube is a skin-level, single-unit, double-lumen device designed for enteral therapy when jejunal feeding and gastric decompression are required. Placed through a gastric stoma, the jejunal limb traverses the stomach into the jejunum, while the gastric lumen remains within the stomach.
Intended use
Provides continuous or bolus jejunal feeding and medication delivery while allowing simultaneous gastric drainage/venting. May be used in neonate, pediatric, and adult patients per clinical judgment.
Port configuration and access
- JEJUNAL port: Delivers formula and medications to the small intestine.
- GASTRIC port: Enables stomach decompression/venting via gravity or low intermittent suction.
- BAL port: For inflation/deflation of the retention balloon. One-way valves in the JEJUNAL and GASTRIC ports open only when a MIC-KEY Extension Set is attached. There is no dedicated medication port; medications are administered via the gastric or jejunal port as directed. The same MIC-KEY extension set design connects to either port using the locking connector. Available in ENFit and non-ENFit (catheter tip) variants.
Retention and stabilization
An internal inflatable silicone balloon provides internal retention, and a low-profile external bolster helps maintain skin-level positioning. The button-style base features clearly labeled ports to support correct access.
Design and performance features
A tungsten-weighted jejunal section helps maintain distal placement. Multiple distal exit ports support feeding distribution, and a tapered tip facilitates passage. Radiopacity is provided by the tungsten weight and a radiopaque stripe for imaging visibility.
Materials and sterility
Constructed of medical-grade silicone and not made with natural rubber latex, DEHP, DBP, or BBP. Gamma sterilized, single-use, and prescription only (Rx).
Sizes and measurement conventions
- French sizes: 14, 16, 18, and 22 Fr.
- Jejunal lengths: 15, 22, 30, and 45 cm (availability varies by French size).
- Stoma lengths: approximately 1.0–7.0 cm (availability varies by French size). Jejunal length is measured from the distal aspect of the retention balloon to the catheter tip.
Balloon inflation guidance
Inflate the balloon with sterile or distilled water only (not saline or air). Recommended volumes: 3 mL for 15/22/30 cm jejunal lengths; 7 mL for 45 cm. Do not exceed manufacturer-stated maximums. Stabilize the tube during inflation and deflation to reduce displacement risk.
Decompression and care guidance
For gastric decompression, use gravity or low intermittent suction; do not use continuous or high-intermittent suction. Do not rotate jejunal/GJ tubes, as rotation can cause retraction into the stomach. Keep ports and valves clean, and connect only MIC-KEY extension sets as intended.
