Description
The Avanos MIC-KEY Low-Profile Gastric-Jejunal (GJ) Feeding Tube is a skin-level button designed for pediatric and adult patients requiring simultaneous jejunal feeding and gastric decompression/venting.
Intended Use
- Supports jejunal feeding while allowing gastric decompression/venting as directed by the care team.
Design and Ports
- Low-profile external button with balloon-retained internal bolster; base should rest approximately 1–2 mm above the skin.
- Three external access points:
- JEJUNAL (J): feeding/medications to the small intestine.
- GASTRIC (G): decompression/venting; medications if clinically directed.
- BAL: balloon inflation/deflation only.
- One-way anti-reflux valves in G and J ports open when a MIC-KEY extension set is attached; keep ports/valves clean.
Connectivity and Extension Sets
- ENFit feeding connectivity; use only MIC-KEY brand extension sets (not interchangeable with other brands).
- Lock-and-key connection with black orientation lines: insert, turn clockwise ~3/4 turn to lock; do not rotate past the stop. Disconnect counter-clockwise while stabilizing the button.
- Extension sets available for continuous/pump or bolus use. Do not inject directly into the feeding port valve—always connect an extension set.
Key Features
- Weighted jejunal segment to help maintain jejunal placement.
- Multiple jejunal exit ports for even distribution of feeds.
- Radiopaque stripe for imaging visibility.
- Tapered distal tip to aid placement.
Materials and Regulatory
- Medical-grade silicone; latex-free.
- Sterile (gamma sterilized); single-use; prescription device (Rx only).
Sizes and Options
- French sizes: 14, 16, 18, 22 Fr.
- Jejunal lengths: 15, 22, 30, 45 cm (availability depends on diameter).
- Stoma length options: approximately 1.0–7.0 cm (availability varies).
Balloon Inflation Guidance
- Inflate with sterile or distilled water only; do not use saline, tap water, or air. Do not overinflate.
- Typical fill volumes: J length 15/22/30 cm = 3 mL (max 5 mL); 45 cm = 7 mL (max 10 mL). Follow the device IFU and clinician prescription.
Use and Care Highlights
- Do not rotate the GJ tube or external bolster; rotation can torque the tube and cause gastric retraction.
- Medications: prefer liquids; do not crush enteric-coated meds; flush with water before, between, and after doses; avoid mixing meds with formula.
- Flushing: flush the tube and extension sets before and after every use to reduce clogging.
- Cleaning: wash hands; clean external base/ports with warm water and mild soap; clean and dry skin around the site daily; use only water‑soluble lubricant.
- Balloon maintenance: stabilize the tube when inflating/deflating; check balloon volume per IFU (commonly weekly) and restore to prescribed volume.
Decompression/Venting
- Use the G port with a Bolus Extension Set. Employ gravity venting or low intermittent suction only; do not use continuous or high intermittent suction.
- Compatible with the FARRELL Decompression System; formula entering the bag should be gravity-fed back to the patient. The white roller clamp controls flow. A syringe may be attached to the extension set before using the bag to help reduce pressure.
Kit Contents (when supplied as a kit)
- MIC-KEY GJ Continuous Feed Extension Set (e.g., 12 in) and MIC-KEY GJ Bolus Feed Extension Set (e.g., 12 in).
- 35 mL syringe (venting/priming/flushing) and 6 mL Luer Slip syringe (balloon inflation/deflation with sterile/distilled water).
- Patient Use & Care Guide. Note: Stoma Measuring Device is typically not included.
Additional Notes
- No dedicated medication port; administer via J or G port per clinical direction.
- If tube fit changes or stoma/weight changes occur, have stoma length re-assessed by a clinician.
- Replace extension sets and the device per IFU and clinical guidance.
