Description
The MIC-KEY Low Profile Balloon Gastrostomy Feeding Tube, developed by Avanos, is a specialized medical device designed for patients requiring long-term enteral feeding. Its discreet, low-profile design ensures comfort and reduces the risk of accidental dislodgement, making it suitable for both pediatric and adult patients.
Key Features
-
Secure Placement: The tube is held in place by an internal retention balloon, which is filled with sterile or distilled water. This feature ensures a secure fit within the stomach, minimizing movement and enhancing patient comfort.
-
Material Composition: Constructed from soft, biocompatible, medical-grade silicone, the tube is latex-free, reducing the risk of allergic reactions.
-
Radiopaque Stripe: This allows for clear visualization under fluoroscopy, aiding in accurate placement and monitoring.
-
Anti-Reflux Valve: Prevents the backflow of gastric contents, providing safety when the extension set is disconnected.
Design and Functionality
The tube features separate ports for feeding and medication administration, along with options for ENFit or Catheter Tip connectors. The SECUR-LOK connector and Safety Ring are designed to prevent accidental intravenous connections, enhancing patient safety.
Compatible with both bolus and continuous feed extension sets, the tube offers flexibility in feeding methods. The extension sets are removable, providing comfort between feeds. Additionally, the tube is marked at 1 cm increments, allowing for easy monitoring of its position.
Available Configurations
The MIC-KEY tube comes in various configurations, with outer diameters ranging from 12 Fr to 24 Fr and stoma lengths from 0.8 cm to 5.0 cm. Balloon volumes are available in 3–5 mL or 5–10 mL, depending on the tube size. Kits may include extension sets, syringes, gauze pads, and other accessories, varying by configuration.
Placement and Maintenance
Placement can be performed under fluoroscopic, laparoscopic, or endoscopic guidance, or as a replacement using an established stoma tract. Typically, the tube requires replacement every 3–6 months. Regular maintenance involves cleaning the tube and stoma site, rotating the tube, and checking balloon volume.
Care Instructions
Users are advised to flush the tube with warm water after feeds to prevent clogging and to use only compatible extension sets. Monitoring for potential issues such as leakage, blockage, or signs of infection is crucial. The device is intended for single use only and should not be reused or resterilized.
Precautions
Contraindications include conditions such as ascites, colonic interposition, and portal hypertension. Patients are encouraged to keep a spare MIC-KEY tube and necessary supplies on hand and to follow clinician instructions closely for optimal outcomes.
