Description
The Avanos MIC-KEY Low-Profile Balloon Gastrostomy Button is a skin-level gastrostomy feeding tube with an internal inflatable retention balloon and an anti-reflux valve in the feeding port. It is intended for long-term enteral nutrition, hydration, and medication delivery to the stomach, and for gastric venting/decompression. Enteral use only; Rx only.
Key features (button)
- Anti-reflux valve remains closed when no extension set is attached.
- Internal silicone balloon retention; radiopaque stripe for x-ray visualization.
- Low-profile external base rests just above the skin to help minimize snagging and clothing interference.
- MR Conditional: safe at 1.5 T and 3 T under Normal Operating Mode; low expected heating and localized imaging artifact.
ENFit extension sets: compatibility and connectors
- Use only MIC-KEY extension sets; they are designed to interface with the MIC-KEY feeding port and open/close the valve.
- Patient-end SECUR-LOK connector (right-angle or straight) with safety ring; align marks and turn to lock.
- Administration end features ENFit connector(s) for ENFit pump sets and/or ENFit syringes; options include a right-angle continuous-feed Y set (one port may be used for medications) and a straight bolus set.
- Validated fit to help reduce leakage; right-angle connector swivels to allow position changes during feeds.
Materials and sterility
- Button: sterile, single-use; ethylene oxide sterilized; not made with natural rubber latex; not made with DEHP.
- Extension sets: non-sterile, reusable for a single patient; not made with natural rubber latex; not made with DEHP.
Sizes and specifications
- French sizes: 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 24 Fr.
- Typical stoma lengths: 0.8–5.0 cm (availability varies by French size).
- Balloon fill with sterile or distilled water only: 12 Fr = 3 mL (max 5 mL); 14–24 Fr = 5 mL (max 10 mL). Do not use air, saline, or contrast.
- Common extension lengths: 12 in (30 cm); additional lengths (e.g., 60 cm) available depending on set.
Use and care highlights
- Deliver feeds, medications, and venting via the extension set; do not inject directly into the feeding port valve.
- Connection: align black marks, insert SECUR-LOK, turn clockwise about a quarter turn to lock; then thread ENFit to the administration set/syringe. To disconnect, turn counter-clockwise to the alignment marks, pull out, and cap the port.
- Flush through the extension before and after feeds and medications; during continuous feeding, flush at routine intervals per care plan.
- Skin care: clean around the stoma daily with mild soap and water; rinse and dry. For G-tubes, rotate the button 360° plus a quarter turn during cleaning (not for J or GJ tubes).
- Balloon: check volume weekly; refill with sterile or distilled water only; stabilize the tube during inflation/deflation to avoid dislodgement.
- Extension care: wash after each use; typical replacement interval is approximately every two weeks (per care plan/policy).
- Placement verification when indicated: aspirate and confirm gastric pH ≤ 5.5 before use per protocol. Venting/decompression can be performed via the extension set.
Sizing and fit
- Measure stoma length to select the correct shaft length. The external base should rest about 1–2 mm above the skin; reassess sizing if clinical status or weight changes, or if leakage/irritation occurs.
Important cautions
- For enteral use only. Keep the extension locked during feeding; cap when not in use.
- Do not exceed recommended balloon fill volumes; use only sterile or distilled water.
- Avoid overtightening ENFit connections.
- Do not reuse, reprocess, or re-sterilize the button device.
