Description
The MIC-KEY (Avanos Medical) Low-Profile Balloon Gastrostomy Button is a skin-level G-tube designed for long-term enteral access in pediatric and adult patients. It supports delivery of nutrition and medications and can also be used for gastric decompression/venting. Placement is performed by a clinician per instructions for use, including percutaneous placement under fluoroscopic, laparoscopic, or endoscopic guidance, or as a replacement through an established stoma tract.
Design and materials
- Low-profile “button” at skin level with capped feeding port (G-port only; no jejunal port)
- Anti-reflux valve in the feeding port to help minimize backflow when not connected
- Internal inflatable retention balloon (silicone) with dedicated balloon port for luer slip syringe
- High-clarity, medical-grade silicone; latex-free
- Radiopaque stripe and recessed distal tip
- Device is ETO sterile; included extension sets are non-sterile, single-patient reusable
Connectors and compatibility
- Use only MIC-KEY extension sets with the MIC-KEY feeding port
- Extension sets provide ENFit connections to enteral syringes/administration sets and a MIC-KEY SECUR-LOK patient-end connector
- SECUR-LOK: align the black marks, turn clockwise a quarter turn to lock (do not over-rotate); turn counter-clockwise to remove; keep locked during feeding
- Feeding methods: bolus via the bolus extension set; continuous feeding via pump/administration set using the continuous feed extension (Y-connector with medication port and clamp)
- Do not insert formula or medications directly into the feeding port valve; deliver only through a connected MIC-KEY extension set
Kit contents (ENFit configuration)
- MIC-KEY Low-Profile Gastrostomy Feeding Tube
- Two ENFit extension sets (nominal 12 in/30 cm): Continuous Feed (Y-connector with medication port and clamp) and Bolus Feed
- 6 mL luer slip syringe (balloon inflation/deflation)
- 35 mL ENFit enteral syringe (priming/flushing via extension)
- Gauze pad
- Insertion stylet and water-soluble lubricant (included in some markets)
- Patient Use & Care Guide (Stoma Measuring Device not included)
Sizes and balloon inflation
- French sizes: 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 24 Fr
- Stoma lengths: 0.8–5.0 cm (various increments)
- Use sterile or distilled water only for balloon inflation (never air or saline)
- 12 Fr: 3 mL recommended; maximum 5 mL
- 14–24 Fr: 5 mL recommended; maximum 10 mL
Care and maintenance
- Clean skin around the stoma and external tube daily with mild soap and water
- During care, gently rotate the button 360° plus a quarter turn
- Flush before and after feeds/medications and periodically during continuous feeds per clinician guidance
- Extension sets: wash in warm soapy water after each use; air dry; single-patient reuse only
- Check balloon volume regularly (often at least weekly) and refill to the prescribed amount while stabilizing the tube
Replacement and sizing
- Replacement timing is determined by a clinician
- Reassess stoma length if weight changes occur, the button feels tight/loose, there is irritation/discomfort, or the tube does not rotate normally
- Clinicians may advise keeping a replacement MIC-KEY device available
