Description
The Avanos MIC-KEY Low-Profile Balloon Gastrostomy Button is a skin-level gastrostomy tube designed for long-term enteral nutrition, medication delivery, and gastric decompression in pediatric and adult patients. It may be placed initially (percutaneous under fluoroscopic, laparoscopic, or endoscopic guidance) or used as a replacement through a mature stoma tract. The low-profile “button” sits close to the skin for comfort and discretion while enabling reliable access via compatible MIC-KEY ENFit extension sets.
Indications and Placement
- Indicated for enteral feeding, medication administration, and gastric venting/decompression.
- Initial placement or replacement per clinician judgment and technique; final fit based on measured stoma length.
Design and Features
- Internal inflatable silicone retention balloon.
- Feeding port with internal anti-reflux valve; access only via MIC-KEY extension sets (do not deliver directly into the valve).
- External base intended to rest about 1–2 mm above the skin.
- Radiopaque stripe for imaging verification.
- Align-and-lock (SECUR-LOK) mechanism; keep locked during feeding.
Connectors and Extension Sets
- ENFit-only interface via MIC-KEY ENFit extension sets.
- Options include right-angle SECUR-LOK continuous feed and straight SECUR-LOK bolus sets; Y-connector provides a dedicated medication port and clamp.
- Common lengths: 12 in (30 cm) and 24 in (60 cm). Non-sterile; single-patient use with periodic replacement per IFU.
Sizes and Balloon Volumes
- French sizes: 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 24 Fr.
- Stoma lengths (cm): 0.8, 1.0, 1.2, 1.5, 1.7, 2.0, 2.3, 2.5, 2.7, 3.0, 3.5, 4.0, 4.5, 5.0 (availability varies; 24 Fr typically 1.5–5.0 cm).
- Balloon inflation (sterile/distilled water only): 12 Fr 3 mL recommended (max 5 mL); 14–24 Fr 5 mL recommended (max 10 mL).
Kit Contents (typical ENFit configuration)
- MIC-KEY low-profile G-tube; 12 in continuous feed extension (ENFit, right-angle SECUR-LOK) and 12 in bolus extension (ENFit, straight SECUR-LOK); 35 mL ENFit enteral syringe; 6 mL Luer syringe for balloon inflation; patient instructions and basic accessories (contents may vary by region).
Materials and Sterility
- Medical-grade silicone with radiopaque component; not made with natural rubber latex or DEHP.
- G-tube is sterile (EO sterilized). Single use; do not reuse, reprocess, or resterilize. Rx only. Do not use if packaging is damaged.
MRI Safety (MR Conditional)
- Safe at 1.5 T or 3 T; max spatial gradient ≤19.6 T/m; whole-body SAR <2 W/kg (Normal Operating Mode). Expected temperature rise <1.3 °C after 15 minutes; typical artifact <45 mm (GRE, 3 T).
Handling and Care Highlights
- Check balloon water volume routinely; stabilize the tube during deflation to prevent dislodgement.
- Rotate gently during skin care; cleanse peristomal skin daily with mild soap and water.
- Flush tube and extension sets before and after use; avoid acidic/effervescent flushes unless directed.
- Connect extension set by aligning marks, pushing in, and turning clockwise to lock (~3/4 turn); turn counter-clockwise to disconnect.
Contraindications and Sizing Notes
- Examples include ascites, colonic interposition, portal hypertension, peritonitis, and morbid obesity.
- Accurate stoma length measurement is required; improper sizing may cause pressure injury, hypergranulation, or buried bumper.
