The Avanos MIC-KEY Low-Profile Balloon Gastrostomy Button is a skin-level G‑tube for long-term enteral nutrition, medication delivery, and gastric decompression in pediatric and adult patients. Its discreet, low-profile design supports comfort and mobility while maintaining secure access for feeding and venting.

Design and materials

• Low-profile button with external skin-level base, covered feeding port, and internal inflatable retention balloon.
• High-clarity, medical‑grade silicone; not made with natural rubber latex; DEHP‑free.
• Radiopaque stripe for X‑ray visualization and a tapered distal tip to aid insertion.
• Proximal anti‑reflux valve in the feeding port remains closed unless an extension set is attached.

Connectors and compatibility

• ENFit connectivity for syringes and administration sets to provide an enteral‑only interface that helps prevent misconnections.
• Use only MIC‑KEY extension sets with the MIC‑KEY feeding port.
• Extension sets feature SECUR‑LOK patient‑end connectors with alignment marks and a quarter‑turn attachment designed to engage the valve without damage; swivel design allows movement during feeding; a safety ring helps prevent inadvertent IV misconnections.
• Continuous Feed extension set: right‑angle SECUR‑LOK connector with Y‑connector/medication port.
• Bolus Feed extension set: straight SECUR‑LOK connector with medication port.

Retention balloon

• Balloon valve accepts a Luer slip syringe; inflate with sterile or distilled water only (do not use air, saline, or contrast media).
• Recommended fill volumes: 12 Fr = 3 mL (max 5 mL); 14–24 Fr = 5 mL (max 10 mL).

Sterility, use, and reprocessing

• G‑tube: single‑use; EO‑sterilized. Do not reuse or resterilize; do not use if package is damaged.
• Extension sets: non‑sterile; reusable for a single patient. Clean after each use per IFU and replace routinely (commonly every two weeks or per clinician guidance).

Placement and verification

May be placed percutaneously under fluoroscopic, laparoscopic, or endoscopic guidance, or used as a replacement through an established stoma tract. The external base should rest approximately 2–3 mm above the skin. Verify placement by aspirating gastric contents (pH assessment) and/or radiographically.

MRI safety (MR Conditional)

Safe at 1.5 T or 3 T; maximum spatial field gradient ≤ 1,960 G/cm (19.6 T/m). Whole‑body SAR < 2 W/kg (Normal Operating Mode). Expected temperature rise < 1.3 °C after 15 minutes; image artifact typically < 45 mm at 3 T (gradient‑echo sequence).

Contraindications (examples)

Ascites, colonic interposition, portal hypertension, peritonitis, and morbid obesity.

Care and handling highlights

• Always attach an extension set to open the anti‑reflux valve; keep the port capped when not in use.
• Clean extension sets with warm soapy water, rinse thoroughly, and flush before/after medications and between different medications.
• Check balloon volume and tube function per IFU/clinician guidance; stabilize the tube when inflating/deflating.
• Perform routine stoma and skin care with mild soap and water; gently rotate the button during cleaning as directed (for G‑buttons, not J/GJ devices).
