Description
The Avanos MIC-KEY low-profile balloon gastrostomy (G) button is a skin-level feeding tube for long-term gastric enteral nutrition, medication delivery, and decompression in pediatric and adult patients. It pairs a discreet external base with an internal inflatable silicone balloon for secure retention. The MIC-KEY SECUR-LOK patient-end accepts MIC-KEY extension sets, and ENFit (ISO 80369-3) feeding connections help reduce enteral misconnections.
Key Features
- Low-profile external base designed to sit ~1–2 mm above the skin
- Inflatable silicone retention balloon for secure placement
- Recessed, tapered distal tip to aid insertion and minimize trauma
- Anti-reflux valve in the feeding port; closed when no extension is attached
- Radiopaque stripe for visualization during placement/verification
- Twist-to-lock MIC-KEY SECUR-LOK patient-end interface for attachment of extension sets
Materials and Compatibility
- Tube: medical-grade silicone with radiopaque stripe; sterile, single-use; not made with natural rubber latex
- Extension sets: non-sterile, reusable for a single patient; not made with natural rubber latex; not formulated with DEHP
- ENFit (ISO 80369-3) feeding connections; attach a MIC-KEY extension set rather than introducing formula/medications directly into the button
Sizes and Balloon Volumes
- French sizes: 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 24 Fr
- Stoma lengths (cm): 0.8–5.0 depending on French size; typical availability: 12 Fr 0.8–4.0 cm; 14–20 Fr 0.8–5.0 cm; 24 Fr 1.5–5.0 cm
- Balloon inflation (sterile or distilled water only): 12 Fr 3 mL recommended (5 mL max); 14–24 Fr 5 mL recommended (10 mL max). Do not use air, saline, or contrast
Kit Contents (ENFit configuration; may vary)
- MIC-KEY low-profile G-tube (button)
- Two MIC-KEY ENFit extension sets (typically right-angle continuous-feed, often with Y-med port; and straight bolus-feed)
- 35 mL ENFit enteral syringe and 6 mL luer slip syringe for balloon inflation/deflation
- Patient use/care information; may include gauze, water‑soluble lubricant; insertion stylet in some regions
Placement and Clinical Use
- May be placed percutaneously under fluoroscopic, laparoscopic, or endoscopic guidance, or used as a replacement in a mature stoma tract (do not use the balloon to create the tract)
- Indications: long-term gastric feeding, medication delivery, and decompression in patients who cannot tolerate oral intake and are at low risk for aspiration; contraindications include ascites, colonic interposition, portal hypertension, peritonitis, and morbid obesity (refer to clinician guidance/IFU)
- MRI safety: MR Conditional at 1.5 T and 3 T; consult the device IFU for specific scanning conditions
Use and Handling Highlights
- Align black marks, press, and twist-to-lock the extension set; keep locked during use; cap when not in use
- Inflate balloon with sterile/distilled water only; verify balloon volume periodically per IFU
- Flush the tube and extension sets before and after each use to maintain patency
- Rotate the tube 360° plus a quarter turn during care to prevent sticking
- Use only water‑soluble lubricant if needed
Warnings
- Rx only. Sterile tube is single-use; do not reuse or re-sterilize
- For enteral applications only; avoid non-enteral connections
- Use only MIC-KEY extension sets with the MIC-KEY G-tube
- Do not introduce formula or medications directly into the feeding port
