Description
The MIC-KEY Low-Profile Balloon Gastrostomy Button by Avanos Medical is a skin-level, balloon-retained feeding tube for enteral nutrition, medication delivery, and gastric decompression in pediatric and adult patients. Its discreet, low-profile design helps reduce snagging under clothing, while ENFit extension sets support standardized enteral-only connections per ISO 80369-3. Prescription use where applicable.
Key features and materials
- High-clarity, medical‑grade silicone tube; sterile and natural rubber latex‑free
- Internal inflatable retention balloon
- Radiopaque stripe and recessed distal tip to aid visibility and reduce tissue irritation
- Anti‑reflux feeding port valve stays closed without an attached extension set
- External base designed to sit approximately 1–2 mm above the skin; tube rotates during care (360° plus a quarter turn)
Connectors and compatibility
- Patient end: MIC‑KEY SECUR‑LOK twist‑lock with alignment marks; align, push to engage, turn clockwise about three‑quarters until resistance; do not rotate past the stop; to disconnect, turn counterclockwise to realign and detach; cap after use
- Feeding side: ENFit connectors (ISO 80369‑3) on compatible extension sets and enteral syringes; use only MIC‑KEY G extension sets with the MIC‑KEY G port; do not introduce formula or medication directly into the port valve
Kit contents (ENFit configuration)
- MIC‑KEY Low‑Profile Gastrostomy Feeding Tube
- Two 12 in ENFit extension sets: continuous‑feed Y set with medication port and clamp; bolus‑feed set (both with SECUR‑LOK patient ends)
- 6 mL luer slip syringe (balloon inflation/deflation)
- 35 mL ENFit enteral feeding syringe
- Gauze pad and Patient Use and Care Guide
- Insertion stylet and water‑soluble lubricant may be included by region; stoma measuring device not included
Sizes and balloon guidance
- French sizes: 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 24 Fr; stoma lengths commonly 0.8–5.0 cm
- Inflate balloon with sterile or distilled water only: 12 Fr 3 mL (max 5 mL); 14–24 Fr 5 mL (max 10 mL). Do not overinflate; check volume at routine intervals per clinical guidance
Use, care, and feeding
- Flush extension set and tube with water before and after each use; keep SECUR‑LOK connection locked during feeds
- Bolus: attach an appropriate ENFit syringe to the bolus set. Continuous: connect a pump giving set to the Y extension
- Venting/decompression may be performed via the extension sets per clinical protocol
- Clean skin around the stoma daily with mild soap and water; avoid puncturing components; use only water‑soluble lubricant; rotate tube during care (360° plus a quarter turn)
Fit, placement, and verification
- Tube length is determined by a clinician; re‑measure if fit concerns arise or with significant weight change; seek assessment if tight/loose fit, stoma irritation, or inability to rotate occurs
- May be placed percutaneously under fluoroscopic, laparoscopic, or endoscopic guidance, or used as a replacement device; verify placement and patency per protocol (e.g., aspirate gastric contents via an ENFit syringe connected through an extension)
MRI safety
- MR Conditional: safe at 1.5 T or 3 T within device labeling (Normal Operating Mode; expected temperature rise <≈1.3 °C after 15 minutes); image artifact localized near the device
Contraindications and cautions
- Potential contraindications include ascites, colonic interposition, portal hypertension, peritonitis, and morbid obesity; evaluate patient‑specific risks
- Single‑use sterile tube; do not reuse, reprocess, or resterilize; for enteral use only and maintain ENFit‑only connections to reduce misconnections
Accessories
- MIC‑KEY ENFit extension sets available in multiple lengths (e.g., 2 in, 12 in, 24 in) and configurations (right‑angle or straight; Y or bolus); non‑sterile, latex‑free, DEHP‑free; intended for single‑patient reuse
