Description
The Avanos MIC-KEY Low-Profile Balloon Gastrostomy Feeding Tube is a silicone, balloon-retained “button” designed for long-term enteral feeding, gastric decompression, and direct medication delivery in pediatric and adult patients. It may be placed percutaneously under fluoroscopic, laparoscopic, or endoscopic guidance, or used as a replacement via a mature stoma.
Design and materials
- Medical-grade, high-clarity silicone tube with internal inflatable retention balloon.
- Radiopaque stripe for imaging; recessed/tapered distal tip at recommended fill volume.
- Low-profile external base to minimize snagging and visibility.
- Sterile (ethylene oxide); prescription use only; not made with natural rubber latex.
Connectors and ports
- ENFit (ISO 80369-3) via MIC-KEY extension sets only; do not connect non-MIC-KEY sets to the G port.
- Anti-reflux feeding valve opens only when an extension set is attached; flush/administer through the extension set—do not insert directly into the valve.
- SECUR-LOK patient-end connectors (right-angle for continuous, straight for bolus) designed to reduce leaks/disconnects and protect the valve.
- Medication port located on the ENFit Y-connector of the continuous feed set; G-tube configuration only (no jejunal port).
Sizes and balloon fill
- French sizes: 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 24 Fr; stoma lengths: 0.8–5.0 cm (e.g., 1.0, 1.2, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, 3.0, 3.5, 4.0, 4.5, 5.0); example variant: 20 Fr × 1.0 cm.
- Balloon fill with sterile/distilled water only: 12 Fr 3 mL (max 5 mL); 14–24 Fr 5 mL (max 10 mL). Do not over‑inflate.
Kit contents (ENFit)
- MIC-KEY Low-Profile G-Tube with ENFit feeding port and balloon valve.
- Continuous Feed Extension Set, 12 in (≈30 cm), SECUR-LOK right‑angle, ENFit Y‑connector with medication port, clamp.
- Bolus Feed Extension Set, 12 in (≈30 cm), SECUR-LOK straight connector, clamp.
- 6 mL Luer slip syringe for balloon inflation/deflation; 35 mL ENFit enteral syringe for feeding/venting/flushing.
- MIC-KEY Patient Use & Care Guide; often supplied: gauze pad(s). Regional kits may include an insertion stylet and water‑soluble lubricant (US only).
- Not included: stoma measuring device.
Operation and handling
- Before use, flush the extension set with water; flush before and after every use.
- Connect: align black lines, push down, then turn clockwise about 3/4 turn until locked; keep locked during feeding. Do not turn past the stop.
- Disconnect: turn counter‑clockwise until the black lines realign, detach, and cap the port. Extension sets are non‑sterile, DEHP‑free, reusable for a single patient only, and not made with natural rubber latex.
Care, fit, and replacement
- Clean skin around the tube daily with mild soap and water; rotate the tube 360° plus 1/4 turn before cleaning.
- Use only water‑soluble lubricant at the stoma if needed; use only sterile/distilled water in the balloon. Check balloon volume periodically (e.g., weekly) and refill as needed.
- External base should rest approximately 1–2 mm above the skin surface (about the thickness of a dime).
- Replacement timing is determined by the clinician; remeasure if weight changes, fit is tight/loose, stoma is irritated, or the tube does not rotate during maintenance.
Safety
- Contraindications include (not limited to) ascites, colonic interposition, portal hypertension, peritonitis, and morbid obesity.
- MR Conditional at 1.5 T and 3 T; follow device labeling for specific conditions of safe use.
- For enteral use only. Single-use sterile device—do not reuse, reprocess, or resterilize the tube. Extension sets are intended for single‑patient reuse. Prescription use only.
