Description
The MEROCEL POPE OTO WICK is a specialized otic device crafted by Merocel, a brand under Medtronic, designed to aid in the effective treatment of otitis externa, commonly known as swimmer’s ear. This innovative ear wick is particularly beneficial when the ear canal is severely swollen, as it facilitates the delivery of topical medications directly to the affected areas.
Key Features
- Advanced Material: Made from a high-density, micropore sponge with oxidized cellulose, the Merocel® polymer is non-linting and non-adherent, ensuring minimal tissue ingrowth and reducing post-removal bleeding.
- Hydration Expansion: The device expands upon hydration with aqueous-based ear drops, conforming snugly to the ear canal to maintain openness and enhance medication delivery.
- Unique Design: Features a patented central hole and fenestration to prevent plugging and ensure even distribution of medication.
- Ease of Use: Increased lubricity allows for easy insertion and removal, even in cases of canal stenosis.
- Sterility: Each wick is sterile, providing a safe option for medical use.

Instructions for Use
To use, the wick is inserted into the ear canal with forceps, aligning the end with the canal entrance. After insertion, ear drops are applied to the external end, causing the wick to expand and fit snugly. Drops can be reapplied as needed, and the wick should generally be removed after 2–3 days, or up to a week if drops are regularly applied. Removal involves moistening with ear drops and gently extracting with forceps.
Compatibility
The MEROCEL POPE OTO WICK is compatible with aqueous-based ear drops such as Gentisone HC, Sofradex, Otomize, Betnesol, Exocin, and EarCalm. It is less effective with oil-based drops. For fungal otitis externa, acetic acid ear drops are recommended for optimal wick expansion.
Common Applications
- Managing severe ear canal swelling due to infection
- Situations where direct ear drop application is hindered by canal stenosis
- Post-middle ear surgery to keep the canal open and secure grafts
Maintenance
Regular changing of the wick every 2–3 days is advised, following the guidance of a healthcare professional. Always adhere to the label instructions and usage directions for best results.
