Iodosorb Ointment, developed by Smith & Nephew, is a specialized wound care solution designed to manage chronic exuding wounds. Its formulation includes cadexomer iodine, providing broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity, making it particularly effective for wounds with local infection, slough, or suspected biofilm.

• Antimicrobial Efficacy: The ointment contains 0.9% elemental iodine, offering sustained release for up to 72 hours. It targets a wide range of pathogens, including MRSA and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and is known for disrupting biofilms in chronic wounds.

• High Absorption Capacity: Iodosorb can absorb up to seven times its weight in wound fluid, helping to maintain an optimal moist wound environment. This feature also aids in desloughing by absorbing excess slough and debris.

• Color Change Indicator: As the iodine is depleted, the ointment changes color from brown to yellow/grey, signaling when a dressing change is needed.

Indications and Contraindications

Iodosorb is suitable for various chronic wounds, such as venous ulcers, pressure ulcers, and diabetic ulcers. It is not recommended for dry wounds, individuals with iodine sensitivity, children under 18, pregnant or lactating women, and patients with certain thyroid disorders.

Application Instructions

To use, cleanse the wound with sterile water or saline, then apply the ointment in a 3mm layer. Cover with a suitable secondary dressing and change 2–3 times a week or as indicated by the color change. Each tube should be used for a single patient to prevent cross-contamination.

Iodosorb Ointment is available in 10g, 20g, and 40g tubes. Proper storage below 25°C is essential to maintain its efficacy.
