Description
The Introcan Safety® 3 by B. Braun Medical Inc. is an advanced peripheral intravenous (IV) catheter system designed to enhance safety and efficiency in vascular access procedures. This innovative device is equipped with a fully automatic, passive needlestick protection mechanism, significantly reducing the risk of needlestick injuries for healthcare professionals. Additionally, its multi-access blood control septum minimizes blood exposure, providing a safer environment for both clinicians and patients.
Key Features
- Double Flashback Technology: Offers two visual confirmations of vessel entry, increasing the likelihood of first-stick success.
- Integrated Stabilization Platform: Enhances catheter stability and reduces movement-related complications, while promoting skin breathability.
- Universal Back Cut Bevel Needle: Minimizes puncture trauma and is suitable for various vein depths, reducing tissue tearing.
Design and Configuration
The catheter is available in winged and non-winged configurations, with an ergonomic hub design that ensures patient comfort and reduces touch contamination. The closed system design, complemented by a removable vented flashplug, minimizes blood exposure and contamination risk. Color-coded labels provide easy identification of product and gauge.
Material and Environmental Considerations
Constructed from Polyurethane (PUR) and Fluorinated Ethylene Propylene (FEP), the catheter is not made with DEHP, natural rubber latex, or PVC. Its environmentally conscious design features smaller, lighter components to reduce waste.
Size and Performance
Available in gauges ranging from 14G to 24G and lengths from 0.55 inches to 2.5 inches, the catheter is pressure rated for power injection up to 325 psi (for 18G–24G). It is suitable for use in both hospital and home care settings, designed for single use, and sterilized with ethylene oxide.
Intended Use
The Introcan Safety® 3 is intended for intravascular and tissue access for blood sampling, blood pressure monitoring, fluid and blood administration, and subcutaneous infusion therapies. It is suitable for all patient groups, including adults, pediatrics, and neonates, with no gender or age limitations.
Instructions for Use
To use, remove the protective cover, ensure proper seating of the catheter hub, and insert at the optimal angle. Confirm vessel entry with the first flashback, advance the catheter, and confirm with the second flashback. Withdraw the needle to activate the passive safety shield, connect the accessory device, and stabilize the site as per protocol.
Additional Features
The device is designed to reduce the risk of peripheral intravenous catheter-related bloodstream infections and is compatible with Caresite® needlefree extension (sold separately). It is supplied sterile and available in various packaging configurations, making it a comprehensive solution for safe and effective vascular access management.
