For optimal performance, the device should be lubricated with a water-based lubricant before use. Proper head positioning and careful insertion technique are recommended to ensure correct placement. The protective cradle should not be used as an introducer.

Precautions

While the i-gel® is a versatile and effective airway device, it is generally not recommended as a primary airway solution for morbidly obese patients due to potential air leaks and hypoventilation risks. It is typically used as a temporary or rescue airway rather than a replacement for endotracheal intubation in patients at risk of aspiration.
