Description
The HOYA iSert 251 Monofocal Preloaded Intraocular Lens (IOL) is a sophisticated solution designed for cataract surgery, offering precision and ease of use. This lens is fully preloaded in the iSert injector system, allowing for controlled and predictable delivery through microincisions. This design enhances surgical efficiency while minimizing the risk of contamination and handling errors.
Optic Design
- Aspheric Optic: The lens features an aspheric, aberration-correcting optic design with Balanced Curve (ABC) technology, providing enhanced visual sharpness.
- Integrated Filters: It includes integrated UV and blue light filters, along with a sharp, square optic edge to reduce posterior capsule opacification (PCO).
- Yellow, Blue-Blocking Optic: These features contribute to improved visual outcomes and long-term eye health.
Material and Haptic Design
- Hydrophobic Acrylic: The optic is made from hydrophobic acrylic (AF-1), while the haptic design includes a modified C-loop configuration with 5° angulation for stable positioning.
- Blue PMMA Tips: The haptic tips are made from blue PMMA, enhancing handling and stability.
Dimensions and Power Range
- Optic Diameter: 6.0 mm
- Overall Length: 12.5 mm
- Power Range: Available from +6.00 to +30.00 diopters (D) in 0.50 D increments.
Injector System
The single-use iSert injector system features a screw-type plunger for controlled lens delivery, compatible with microincision cataract surgery (MICS). It is designed for incision sizes between 2.2–2.75 mm, ensuring smooth passage and controlled unfolding of the lens. The system requires an ophthalmic viscoelastic device (OVD) for insertion, with a lens insertion time of approximately 30 seconds.
Performance and Safety
The HOYA iSert 251 is engineered to minimize friction, incision size, and surgically induced astigmatism. It self-centralizes in the capsular bag and is both FDA approved and CE marked. With over 10 million units implanted worldwide, it boasts a proven track record of safety and performance over 15–20 years.
Handling Instructions
Delivered as a dry, preloaded system, the lens comes with stepwise loading and implantation instructions. It is recommended to inject within 3 minutes after advancing the slider, with specific precautions to ensure correct haptic positioning.
Manufacturing and Availability
Following a precautionary recall between October 2011 and January 2013 due to trace metallic particulates, manufacturing improvements have been implemented. The lens is available in multiple global regions, including the USA, Japan, EMEA, and APAC.
Indications for Use
The HOYA iSert 251 is intended for use in cataract surgery, designed for implantation in the capsular bag via microincision techniques, providing a reliable and advanced option for ophthalmic professionals.
