Description
Smith & Nephew's ALGISITE M is a specialized calcium alginate wound dressing designed to enhance the healing process for moderate to heavily exuding wounds. Crafted from high M-type alginate fibers, this dressing transforms into a soft gel upon contact with wound exudate, maintaining an optimal moist environment conducive to healing.
Key Features
- High Absorbency: Capable of absorbing up to ten times its weight in fluid, ALGISITE M effectively manages wound exudate, reducing the need for frequent dressing changes.
- Moisture Retention: The gel formation helps prevent eschar formation and supports wound contraction, potentially minimizing scarring.
- Permeability: Allows for liquid evaporation and gaseous exchange, fostering a balanced wound environment.
Design and Application
The unique fiber composition and needle bonding process of ALGISITE M minimize fiber shedding, ensuring the dressing remains intact during use and removal. Its high wet strength allows for easy removal, reducing discomfort and disturbance to the wound bed. The dressing conforms seamlessly to wound contours, making it suitable for a variety of wound shapes and sizes.
Compatibility and Safety
ALGISITE M is designed for single use and is easy to apply and remove. It minimizes the risk of irritation or allergic reactions, making it suitable for sensitive skin. It is not classified as hazardous under GHS, OSHA, NTP, or IARC, ensuring safety in handling and use.
Indications
This dressing is ideal for:
- Pressure injuries
- Venous leg ulcers
- Donor sites
- Other granulating wounds
It can also assist in managing minor bleeding and serve as an adjunct in treating infected, malodorous, or painful wounds. The rope form is particularly beneficial for deep cavity wounds and sinuses.
Application Instructions
For optimal results, the dressing should be slightly larger than the wound and placed in intimate contact with the wound base. It can be cut or folded to fit and should be covered with a suitable secondary dressing. Change frequency varies based on wound drainage, with the potential to remain in place for up to seven days.
Sizes Available
- Flat pads: 5 cm x 5 cm, 10 cm x 10 cm, 15 cm x 15 cm, 15 cm x 20 cm
- Rope: 2 cm x 30 cm
Each dressing is individually packed in peel pouches and available in various box counts.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 25°C (77°F) to maintain product integrity. Proper disposal should follow local regulations.
Contraindications
Not recommended for very dry wounds or those covered with hard black necrotic tissue. Care should be taken not to pack the rope form tightly in wound cavities to prevent discomfort.
