Description
DITROPAN TAB is a medication designed to manage symptoms associated with an overactive bladder, such as urinary frequency, urgency, and urge incontinence. It is particularly beneficial for individuals with neurogenic bladder conditions, including those related to spina bifida and multiple sclerosis. The active ingredient, oxybutynin hydrochloride, functions as an anticholinergic agent, helping to relax the bladder muscle, increase bladder capacity, and reduce involuntary contractions.
Dosage Forms
- Immediate-Release Tablets: Available in 2.5 mg and 5 mg strengths.
- Extended-Release Tablets (DITROPAN XL): Available in 5 mg strength.
Tablet Characteristics
The 5 mg tablets are round, light blue, and may be marked with identifiers such as OXB5 or OBC5. They contain inactive ingredients like lactose, microcrystalline cellulose, and various colorants. These tablets are typically supplied in bottles or blister packs, with common quantities being 30, 90, or 100 tablets.
Patient Suitability
DITROPAN TAB is suitable for adults, the elderly, and pediatric patients aged 5 years and older. Dosage adjustments are recommended for elderly patients to enhance tolerability. The medication should be taken orally with water, and extended-release tablets must not be chewed, crushed, or divided.
Pharmacokinetics
The medication is rapidly absorbed, with immediate-release forms reaching peak plasma concentration within 0.5 to 1 hour. It is highly protein-bound and primarily metabolized by CYP3A4, with a plasma half-life of 2 to 3 hours for immediate-release forms.
Contraindications
Patients with hypersensitivity to oxybutynin, urinary retention, gastric retention, or certain other medical conditions should avoid using this medication. It is also contraindicated in individuals with uncontrolled narrow-angle glaucoma and myasthenia gravis.
Precautions
Caution is advised for elderly or frail patients and those with hepatic or renal impairment. Potential side effects include dry mouth, constipation, drowsiness, and blurred vision. Patients should be aware of the risk of heat prostration due to decreased sweating.
Drug Interactions
Interactions may occur with other anticholinergic drugs, sedatives, and CYP3A4 inhibitors or inducers. Patients should consult healthcare providers to manage potential interactions effectively.
Storage Instructions
Store DITROPAN TAB below 25°C, away from light and moisture. Keep the medication out of reach of children and dispose of any unused tablets properly. The tablets do not contain gluten, sucrose, or certain dyes, making them suitable for individuals with specific dietary restrictions.
