Description

What it is

Calogen (Nutricia) is a ready-to-use, energy-dense, shot-style, protein-free long-chain triglyceride (100% LCT) fat emulsion for enteral use under medical supervision. It contains no added protein or fibre, has very low electrolyte content, and no added vitamins or minerals. It can be taken undiluted or mixed into foods and drinks, used to boost the energy content of tube feeds, and may serve as a protein-free milk replacer in protein-restricted diets. Supplied in ergonomic bottles with resealable, easy-open caps.

Neutral

• Per 100 ml: 450 kcal; fat 50 g (saturates 5.3 g; monounsaturates 30.4 g; polyunsaturates 14.3 g; omega-6:omega-3 5:1); carbohydrate 0.1 g; protein 0 g; fibre 0 g; water 45 ml; sodium 7 mg (0.3 mmol); chloride 0.1 mg (0.003 mmol); osmolality ~5 mOsmol/kg H2O.
• Per 30 ml (typical “shot”): 135 kcal; fat 15 g (saturates 1.6 g; monounsaturates 9.1 g; polyunsaturates 4.3 g).

Strawberry

• Per 100 ml: 466 kcal; fat 50 g (≈96% energy); carbohydrate 4.1 g; protein 0 g; fibre 0 g; water 43 ml; osmolality ~360 mOsmol/kg H2O.

Typical fatty acid profile (g/100 g fatty acids, typical): C18:1 59.3; C18:2 n‑6 23.7; C18:3 n‑3 4.75; C16:0 5.4; C18:0 3.2.

Ingredients

• Neutral: Vegetable oils (rapeseed oil, sunflower oil), demineralised water, emulsifier (citric acid esters of mono- and diglycerides of fatty acids).
• Strawberry: As Neutral plus sugar, strawberry flavour, colour E120.

Indications (dietary management)

• Disease-related malnutrition; high energy requirements.
• Poor compliance to standard multi-nutrient ONS.
• Where fluid/volume, electrolyte, or mineral restriction is required.
• Protein- or residue-restricted diets.

Directions for use and typical intake

• Shake well. Use under healthcare professional supervision.
• Typical intake: 3 × 30 ml per day, undiluted or mixed into foods/fluids.
• May enhance energy content of tube feeds. May require dilution for children under 5 years.

Important notices and suitability

• For enteral use only; not for parenteral use.
• Not suitable as a sole source of nutrition.
• Not suitable for patients with galactosaemia.
• Use with caution in children under 6 years.
• Flavoured (strawberry) not suitable for infants and children under 3 years; Neutral may require dilution under 5 years.

Allergen and cultural information

• No gluten-containing ingredients; tested <5 ppm gluten.
• Low lactose (<2 g/100 g).
• Halal certified. Kosher approval except flavours containing carminic acid (E120).

Storage

• Store unopened in a cool, dry place; do not freeze.
• Once opened, reseal, refrigerate, and use within 14 days; discard any unused contents after 14 days.
