Description

The Avanos BALLARD Closed Suction Catheter System with Multi‑Access Port (MAP) is a sterile, in‑line suction solution designed to remove airway secretions from endotracheal or tracheostomy tubes without disconnecting the ventilator. Its closed‑circuit design helps maintain ventilation and PEEP while containing secretions and limiting cross‑contamination during routine and advanced airway care.

Key features and technologies

  • Turbo‑Cleaning closed suction: catheter retracts into a vacuum‑sealed, turbulent cleaning chamber to clean the catheter tip.
  • PEEP Seal technology to help reduce PEEP loss and maintain a sealed cleaning environment.
  • Protective sheath enclosing the catheter to limit contamination.
  • One‑way lavage port with a hinged valve to help prevent sprayback and inadvertent lavage.
  • Optional integrated MDI port for in‑line metered‑dose inhaler delivery.
  • Thumb valve/control switch for suction activation.
  • Sleeve tether to help prevent over‑retraction of the catheter.
  • Numbered catheter markings to help control insertion depth.

Multi‑Access Port (MAP) manifold

  • Compact rotating manifold with multiple access ports that locks in place to help keep the circuit sealed.
  • Enables suctioning and procedures such as bronchoalveolar lavage, bronchoscopy, and in‑line MDI delivery while maintaining a closed circuit.
  • Catheter parks and locks in a separate protected port, remaining connected and clean.
  • Single‑use seal cassette helps maintain PEEP during insertion of sampling catheters or other devices.

Intended use and compatibility

  • For mechanically ventilated Adult, Pediatric, and Neonatal patients.
  • Compatible with endotracheal and tracheostomy tubes; integrates with standard ventilator circuits.
  • Works with the Avanos Mini‑BAL sampling catheter via the MAP alternate therapy port for lower respiratory tract sampling without opening the circuit.

Configurations and options

  • Patient groups: Adult; Neonatal/Pediatric.
  • Airway interfaces: Endotracheal and Tracheostomy.
  • Connector styles: Double Swivel Elbow, T‑piece, Y‑adapter; additional styles include Standard, Directional, Dual‑lumen, and MAP.
  • Options: Dry or WET PAK (with in‑line saline), optional MDI Built‑In variants, optional irrigation/saline port.

Sizes and dimensions

  • Approximate French sizes: 5–16 Fr (Neo/Paed through Adult).
  • Typical lengths: Adult endotracheal ≈54 cm; Adult tracheostomy ≈30.5 cm; Neonatal/Pediatric ≈30.5–40.5 cm (size‑appropriate Y‑adapters on Neo/Paed models).

Materials and sterility

  • Sterile, single‑patient use; gamma sterilized.
  • Free of natural rubber latex and DEHP.
  • Typical in‑use duration: up to 72 hours or per institutional protocol.
  • Typical shelf life: around 3 years.

Supported procedures and clinical intent

  • Routine closed airway suctioning; bronchoalveolar lavage and bronchoscopy via MAP; in‑line MDI delivery where equipped.
  • Closed‑circuit design is intended to help maintain ventilation and PEEP, contain secretions, limit caregiver exposure, and support VAE/VAP prevention protocols.
