Description

The 68 ANIRIDIA IOL, also known as the Aniridia Implant Type 68 Morcher, is a specialized intraocular lens designed to address the unique needs of patients with aniridia, whether congenital or traumatic. This lens is intended for use in aphakia or cataract surgeries, providing significant relief from symptoms such as photophobia and glare, while also offering cosmetic enhancement by simulating the appearance of the iris.

Key Features

  • Monofocal Design: The lens features a monofocal, refractive, spheric optic with a pupillary aperture of 4.5 mm. It does not correct astigmatism, making it suitable for specific visual correction needs.

  • Material Composition: Constructed from black PEMA and PMMA, the lens includes biconvex optics and PMMA haptics with zero-degree angulation. It provides UV-light protection, although it lacks additional blue light control.

  • Customizable Dimensions: The lens offers a customizable diameter ranging from 9.0 mm to 12.5 mm in 0.5 mm increments, with an overall size of 12.5 mm. The required incision size is greater than 10.0 mm.

Implantation and Fixation

  • Versatile Placement: The lens can be implanted in the capsular bag or sulcus, with or without suture fixation, using 9-0 Prolene with a spatula needle. It is not preloaded and can be combined with most IOL models, accommodating both sutureless and suture fixation techniques.

  • Model Variants: Available in two main models—Fiber Free and Fiber—catering to different surgical needs regarding suture fixation.

Optical and Material Properties

  • Refractive Index: The lens has a refractive index of 1.49, with specific constants for scleral sutured placement.

  • Biocompatibility: Made from highly biocompatible, flexible silicone, the lens can be folded and injected through small incisions or sutured to the sclera.

  • Iris Simulation: The peripheral colored region resembles the iris, with various pigmentation options and tinted IOLs to reduce photophobia.

Clinical Benefits

This lens significantly reduces light sensitivity and glare, enhancing the cosmetic appearance for patients with traumatic or congenital aniridia. It is suitable for cases of extreme subluxation, where scleral-fixated IOLs may be necessary. The device's customizable shape and size allow it to match the patient's iris defect, supporting a wide range of surgical techniques and implantation methods.
