Description
The 5.5mm MICROCUFF™ Paediatric Endotracheal Tube is a specialized medical device designed for effective airway management in paediatric patients, typically aged 8 to less than 10 years. Available in Oral/Nasal Magill and Oral Curved types, this tube is crafted to meet the unique anatomical needs of young patients.
Design Features
- Material: Constructed from polyvinyl chloride (PVC), the tube features a micro-thin polyurethane cuff membrane, enhancing its performance with a high volume, low pressure (HVLP) design.
- Dimensions: Inner diameter of 5.5 mm and outer diameter of 7.3 mm.
- Radiopaque Line: Includes a radiopaque line for imaging and centimeter depth markings for precise placement.
- Black Intubation Depth Mark: Positioned above the cuff for accurate placement between the vocal cords.
Cuff Design
The cuff is short, cylindrical, and distally placed to create a subglottic cuff-free zone. Its ultra-low pressure reduces the risk of airway trauma and mucosal injury, while providing superior sealing at low pressures. The cuff membrane is robust, withstanding burst pressures over 800 cm H₂O, and offers high puncture strength.
Placement and Safety
The tube's design includes four precision bands to facilitate optimal placement, and it lacks a Murphy Eye, featuring a short tip instead. The Blue Vent Connector aids in secure attachment. The tube is sterile, latex-free, and intended for single use only.
Clinical Benefits
- Anatomical Accuracy: Ensures ideal cuff placement, reducing the need for tube replacement and lowering re-intubation rates.
- Aspiration Risk Reduction: Designed to minimize the risk of aspiration of blood and secretions, making it suitable for minimal and low flow anaesthesia.
- Head Movement Safety: Provides a margin of safety against endobronchial intubation during head flexion and against extubation during head extension.
Usage Guidelines
Proper usage involves positioning the black intubation depth mark between the vocal cords and monitoring cuff pressure continuously. The tube should be tested for integrity before use, and after single use, it should be discarded. Securing the tube with cotton tape or Elastoplast and confirming position through auscultation and chest X-ray are recommended practices.
Clinical Evidence
Extensive clinical studies, including large randomized controlled multicenter trials, have demonstrated the tube's safety and functionality. It has shown reliable sealing, correct placement, and low rates of postintubation stridor, with no unexpected or long-term adverse effects.
Packaging
Each box contains 10 sterile tubes, ensuring readiness for clinical settings.
